Calpol not bringing temp down

2 year old is sick... again! He has only just got over viral conjunctivitis.

Temp was 39.1 at 12:30 so gave a dose of Calpol and it hasn’t really done much which is unusual for him. Normally Calpol brings his temp down to 37.5 ish but it’s still at 38.9/39.

I don’t want to try ibuprofen in case this is the start of chicken pox (where it’s not recommended to use ibuprofen)

Is this a 111 issue?

No, I think medics would advise 24 hrs of carpool at least before worrying, as long as other symptoms don't suggest anything serious.

Have you any reason to suspect chickenpox?

JanglyBeads · 04/06/2022 13:51

*calpol not carpool, obviously

I'd personally give ibuprofen as you don't know if it's chicken pox ... never heard of no ibuprofen in CP ? What's the reasoning?

Ok just read up on why ... so do you have good reason to believe it's CP

A couple of kids on our street have it at the moment and it seems to be doing the rounds here. Also, he has no other symptoms at all right now apart from this high temperature!

We had this yesterday - we called 111 and by the time they called back (12+ hours) the fever broke. We used ibuprofen too but it didn't bring temp down much either. My online digging said that more than 24 hours at that temp was cause for concern so we didn't worry too much as DD was ok in herself if a little tired. Hope the little one feels better soon.

When my son had a fever the GP recommended ibuprofen as more effective at reducing temp. Why do you think it's chicken pox?

Whathefisgoingon · 04/06/2022 14:33

Thanks all. He has just gone to sleep and it is finally coming down!

People told me he would be sick all the time once he started nursery, but I didn’t think it would quite literally be one illness after the next on repeat.
