Hand foot and mouth - are the spots the start or the end?

My 2 year old has red spots on her hands, feet and bottom. She's very happy and doesn't seem bothered by them. She was unwell just over a week ago, but I assume that's separate.

I'm just wondering if the spots are the start or the end of HFM? Googling or NHS website haven't helped me much. We're due to go away this weekend and I don't know if we ought to cancel (i.e. if she's going to get worse and really miserable).

Thank you!

For us it was it getting better.
Ds had a high temperature of 40 for about 5 days, even a hospital admission, before the spots appeared. After that the temperature thing got better, and he was back to normal within a few days.

Thank you for your reply. I'm encouraged! Maybe the temperature over a week ago was part of it then?

Grateful for other people's experiences!

I’d like to say the spots are the final flourish but please don’t be surprised if she loses one or two finger or toe nails in a couple of weeks time.

@MooseBeTimeForSnow omg what?? How frightening.

But - do you mean that the spots come after the fever/misery?

Don’t worry, the nails do grow back!

Yes, unwell/fever before the spots appear. But it can be a miserable time, especially if spots appear inside the mouth.

Spots have been reported on hands, feet and bum so far. Apparently appeared after her nap. She's still at nursery and they don't seem bothered about us collecting her as she's happy.

Is she still contagious?

Both mine were better by the time the spots came out. With my second it was a relief to see them as explained why he had been so sad and what had been wrong with him.

No nails falling off here.

Just put in quarantine incase it was covid as we had just flown when temperature started. He hadn’t slept well when temperature hence a few days to back to normal once spots out. If yours is well enough to be at nursery, I doubt they will get sicker now

Thank you all. The spots must be related to her high temperature and sadness over a week ago then. We didn't see any blisters or sores in her mouth, but she was off her food.
