Hi everyone.
I have a 26 month old (2 year old) boy. I am starting to become a little concerned on his speech it's giving me some anxiety that I'm not doing things right.
He can say some things like, hello, please, thank you, bye, he can say some animals, he can make animal noises, he can say dinosaur (he is obsessed) and a few other little basic words and some people's names and mummy and daddy. He can't really talk yet as in any sentences etc. Am I right in saying I should be worried or should I give it some more time? I just see other people with kids the same age who can say a lot more. Has anyone ever been in this situation?

Sentences at 26months is optimistic. Ideally a child would have roughly 50 single word and a few word combinations like ‘daddy gone’ emerging around 2. This is a link to what to expect…ican.org.uk/i-cans-talking-point/parents/ages-and-stages/. ICAN has some nice advice sheets for parents under the FAQ.

if you are worried you could potentially access some advice from a SALT via a self referral to local NHS services.

@Josie9998 yes I have been in that situation my 9 year old was about 2 years old she only spoke some words like; names of people, animals and places. Wasn't saying sentence, it takes time. I took her to a speech and language lady and she was able to communicate well in sentences with her but not out in public or in school, only places she felt safe.

Have you had the two year check with HV yet? You can google the questionnaire they use, don’t forget to look at the score sheet they are not expected to fo everything. If necessary you can self refer to SaLT.
