Question about baby poop

VixFromThe6ix · 30/05/2022 20:39

Hi mamas,

My baby boy is 4+ months old. For the last two weeks his poop became very watery. He poops about 2-3 times a day and doesn't really seem like it's causing him discomfort.

Some poops follow some farts, some coming out with diarrhea kind of noise, but all are runny.

He doesn't seem to be dehydrated. He's acting his usual self, playing, laughing, eating, sleeping, etc.

Nothing in my diet has changed.

Have any of you experienced this? Should I worry?

Poop colour is darker shade of orange.

Thanks in advance!!

If all is fine with the child personally I'd just keep half an eye and see. Poo changes so much as the gut matures, the children go through different illnesses or dietary changes, teething...as the song said in Scrubs, everything comes down to poop.

But if he's eating, sleeping, playing and generally all good I wouldn't worry at all. Probably just the gut maturing.

Everything I read on the internet makes me think there is an issue but he's being his normal self.

Being first time payment is so nerve-racking lol

The exact same thing happened with my son when he was the same age although he was and is formula fed. I was really worried as he would have a poo explosion daily for nearly three weeks as it was so so runny but he was otherwise completely normal in himself.

Eventually I spoke to the GP who advised that we try weaning him slightly early to see if that made a difference. They were confident since he’s a fairly big baby with good head control that it wouldn’t do him any harm. I was a bit hesitant as I wanted to wait until he was 6 months but gave it a go with purées/baby porridge to start and his poo went back to normal almost overnight. So that’s something you could consider but obviously seek medical advice first.

This is really interesting. I am also hoping to wait till he's 6mos but my partner and MIL are saying I should maybe start early.
He has good head control but he doesn't sit independently. Does that matter?
How did your baby take to a spoon?
What was the breakdown between breastfeeding and meals?

I don’t think that matters as my baby boy has just turned six months now and still can’t sit independently! But he sits fine in his high chair as it has shoulder straps which keep him in place, it took a week or so for him to remain centred and not leaning to either side but he got the hang of it very quickly.

He is formula fed so initially I just started with a bit of baby porridge in the mornings followed by his morning milk feed. Then some fruit/veg purée in the afternoon/evening at least an hour after a bottle so I knew he would be hungry enough but not starving and also with enough time to digest before bath/bed. Portions were very small to start with, only a few spoons at most and sometimes he just wasn’t interested so I didn’t push it. At first his tongue thrust reflex did mean a lot was spat out but that disappeared within a few days and he was eating from the spoon just fine. After a few weeks I started introducing a lunch which is usually half a mashed banana or some other fruit purée. I’m not too strict on timings, I just try to fit his meals in between his naps and milk feeds where I can.

So like I said it worked for us and he loves his food now but only you know what’s right for you and your baby!

Runny poos are a big sign he might be teething.
Rather than weaning early check for other signs for teeth coming through like excessive saliva, chewing on hands etc.
I'd prob not starting weaning before 6 months unless u have HV or GP go ahead.

I want to wait till 6 months for sure. I'm fighting family members who think I should start before.😤

And that's what I am now thinking too that it's teething. I was just reading about it.
He is always chewing on his fingers and drooling.

How long does teething last? One article said 8 days, we are way past that lol

Depends on the child, the teeth and how many little fuckers are trying to break through. Dc1 would have a terrible time and then pop! 4 teeth appear at once. Dc2 did one at a time, Very very very slowly but he was less distressed by it all. Some children see to be continually teething for the first 2 years.

The excessive saliva being swallowed causes loose stools in teething babies.
