Just a few things is more than enough - we got DD a very cute French pull-along wooden turtle (about £11, and a soft toy (£8) and some clothes, and a “keepsake” hardback book of children’s poems we wrote a first birthday dedication in (about £12 IIRC). She also got loads of toys from relatives (eg. a wheelybug from grandparents) so there was no need for us to buy a lot.

Don’t go overboard for a first birthday! A special teddy and book and a few toys is more than enough! Save your money for the years when they get far more expensive 😂

Nothing yet. We were completely inundated at Christmas (a bit overwhelming to be honest!) so feel she'll have more than enough from family. I am going to ask for ZSL membership (we live near whipsnade) and a 3in1 microscooter if anyone asks though.

All of mine got their first teddy on their first birthday. That was all from me and DH. Absolutely no need to get lots of presents. Grandparents/aunties etc got them things they needed, e.g. first pair of shoes, bath toys, new sleeping bags.

We only bought one present. It was a baby doll. She had loads of presents from family and I think lots of new things can be a bit overwhelming when they're so small. We spread out opening them over several days so it wasn't so intense.

pinkspottyladybird · 31/05/2022 20:33

We only bought one, it was a bubble machine. We knew she was getting loads from family members so we didn't see the point.

Didn’t buy them anything. They have no idea and the grandparents bought them a few things. I would say it’s better to save the money and buy things when they need it, it’s very overwhelming for them to have everything at once - they don’t know what to play with!

We bought one - a large bag of Megablocks as she loved them so much at nursery.

MissLC · 31/05/2022 20:40

We bought a play tent and tunnel from Argos which were on offer two for £15. She's not bothered about them already only 2 months on.

Regularmumnetter · 31/05/2022 20:46

Didn’t buy them anything 😂. Sounds cruel but they were 1 and we thought they won’t even remember it

A balloon and a melamine dinner set. They got plenty of gifts from friends and relations.

Ds is turning one soon and I'm planning to buy him just some clothes (ie the next size up, which we'd have to buy anyway) and I'll ask DD to pick a few of her old toys to give him from her. Just a few things that he can tear the packaging off. I'd probably not bother buying anything new and certainly no toys (as we still have too many from DD) but I don't want DD to think that her little brother's birthday isn't important.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 31/05/2022 22:20

I think it was a fire truck ride on that cost me a tenner from another mum. Cannot remember the rest but she's 9 now so I guess that's understandable. Might have been a walker as well

We got dd1 Megablocks, a play tunnel and one of those blue plastic rocking horse things for the garden. The tunnel was played with until it fell apart. The youngest has just about outgrown the Megablocks and rocker now so they have done us 8 years service for 3 dcs and are still in great condition to pass on to a friend. I think we chose well!
First teddy is a lovely idea though.
