Ds5 had been vomiting for just over 12 hours. Unable to hold down any water and completely drowsy. Called and was seen by OOO GP who had us syringe some juice which perked him up and gave us pee. Thank the Lord. Sent us home saying if he started vomiting again to call back.

Home a couple of hours and hes now stopped vomiting but has a temp now which is new and keeps waking up gibbering about random obscure stuff. I’ve given him some calpol, but would you call back to go back to ooo or treat this as a simple fever now the vomiting and fluids are bettering?

The temperature alone wouldn't concern me overly but the nonsense talk would if it's not usual.

Yes I woukd call back OOH Dr if the fever/vomiting didnt settle within 30 minutes of giving calpol. The worst that will happen is they reassure you.

Thanks. Back on hold again as the calpol hasn’t moved his temp at all…

Give him some ibuprofen as well, both together help bring a fever down. I also have a LO with a fever at the moment. Hope he gets well soon 🙏

Bananamama22 · 29/05/2022 20:25

Thanks. I did suggest that but the nhs website says not too unless advised by GP so didn’t want to go in with it without checking!

he’s just asked for some crisps which I guess is a positive sign.

DD was like this with a UTI. I had no idea they presented so differently in children. We were sat in A&E for hours trying to get her hydrated enough to provide a sample. She needed anti sickness medicine to keep enough fluid down.

Milliesmummy92 · 29/05/2022 20:29

Not sure where you live but where I am (South Yorkshire) there is a really horrible sickness bug going around kids. So many of my friends little ones have been really poorly for a good 3/4 days with the exact same symptoms and one of my friends DS also had runs to the point she changed his nappy 20 times in about 12 hours! Hopefully they can sort something for him xx

We’re in Scotland. Funnily enough when we did get a pre at OOO the GP was annoyed the nurse didn’t check it. But he couldn’t manage another one

I was going to suggest ibuprofen too. For one one my dds, calpol just stops her fever getting higher, only ibuprofen brings it down. GP once told me that apparently it's reasonably common..

But IMO - HCPs would rather be called in the case of a sick child that you're worried about that not, so don't hesitate to call them back if you are worried.

dementedpixie · 29/05/2022 20:35

If calpol isn't working then you are able try a dose of ibuprofen to see if that helps
