10 month baby old might have had some coffee

So like an idiot I left my coffee cup at the other end of the room from my just about 10 month old barely mobile baby for a few minutes to switch the kettle on.

When I returned he had spilled the entire contents of the mug on himself and there was some on his face as well.

Thankfully it was just luke warm, he didn't cry and his skin wasn't red at all so I'm not too worried about him getting burnt but I'm worried about the caffeine.

It was filter coffee but with lots of milk. He can't really drink from a cup yet but he might have got a mouthful if he spilt it over his face? His face wasn't soaked but there was some on the lower half of his face.

I think it should be ok but I'm still super worried. Do I have to go to A n E? I don't really want to call 111 because I've got no idea to explain how much he might have had so without seeing him I don't think there's anything they can do.

Rant (ignore if you have made it so far and are tired from rolling your eyes):

I don't even know how he got there so quickly. He can't crawl yet though he can kind of heave his body (he's massive) around. It's cumbersome and slow. I less he has suddenly started crawling today (he's almost there, rocking on all fours etc). He was in eye line of dh though dh wasn't really watching him continuously because I was on the floor playing with him till I got up to put the stupid kettle on. Ugghj...

I'm breastfeeding and have limited amounts of coffee and tea so he might be used to a bit of caffeine in his system.

Is this ok? Does he need to be seen?

Premature babies are given caffeine to help them, he will be fine! Definitely no need for medical consultation.

LividLaVidaLoca · 29/05/2022 11:06

If he wasn’t burned and he didn’t neck a pint of Red Bull, he’s totally fine.

Honest.

Footballsundays6777 · 29/05/2022 11:06

He will be fine don’t worry, maybe a little more alert but will be fine. Doesn’t need checking out anywhere

Bless you, he'll be fine. We all have horror stories much worse, don't feel guilty

Hugasauras · 29/05/2022 11:09

I wouldn't worry about this at all!

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 29/05/2022 11:11

It wouldn't even occur to me to worry about this. Relax!

rocketfromthecrypt · 29/05/2022 11:11

A&E? No. Even if he did ingest any, will have precisely no effect on him OP.

This!

SpiderVersed · 29/05/2022 11:13

Bless you, it’s fine. And definitely never in a million years an A&E event. Won’t do him any harm at all.

RandomQuest · 29/05/2022 11:13

Some people will give 10MOs the odd bit of chocolate which contains more caffeine than whatever might have splashed in the direction of his mouth when he spilt your milky coffee! Don’t worry about it but lesson learned for next time as it could have been bad if it was hot. It’s a whole new challenge when they get mobile isn’t it?!

Sodthatforagameofsoldiers · 29/05/2022 11:13

If he's not burned I honestly wouldn't worry. It's just a lesson learned, as it could have been hot. My son pulled an actual boiling cup of tea on himself at 7 months 🤦🏻‍♀️ which did involve a trip to A&E and a call from the health visitor!

Until they are about 2.5y they are a complete liability and will injure themselves 100 times a day and put God knows what in their mouths. I was once babysitting my niece and son, she was potty training and did a poo in the potty. I went across the room to get her wipes and in those 2.3 seconds my DS had commando crawled at a million miles an hour to the potty in an attempt to eat the poo. I caught him in time, thankfully.

I'm not covering myself in glory here 🤣

elenacampana · 29/05/2022 11:13

Nothing at all to worry about. At worst, his very tiny caffeine hit might disrupt his nap!

ATadConfused · 29/05/2022 11:13

He will be totally fine, much more so than any soft furnishings!!

please, print off your post & put it in your memories box.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 29/05/2022 11:16

He’ll be absolutely fine.
Thank god it wasn’t hot, and now you’ve had your wake up call about what he can reach.

I found this the most challenging stage personally, my DS would obsessively pull himself up and fall on his face (repeatedly) unless I was right there to catch up. Hopefully your DS will have more sense than mine!

orangeisthenewpuce · 29/05/2022 11:17

Do not go to a&e with this. Please. It's nothing to worry about.

Sodthatforagameofsoldiers · 29/05/2022 11:18

My DD did this, in every photo of her aged 1-2 her face is black and blue 😩

TangyTangerine · 29/05/2022 11:33

Thanks everyone. No a n e then. Dh said he'll be fine too but I trust the collective wisdom of Mumsnet more!!

Lesson learnt. He's mobile. 😮😱

One day you'll laugh about this op.

I took pfb to the gp for fingernails that were too bendy.

This is very interesting. Why? To speed up their metabolism? Does it help with their growth?

Haha that's adorable and something I might have done with my PFB.

Ds isn't even my first born. 😶

😁thats hilarious. What did you think that overly bendy fingernails might signify?

OP, babies are tough little buggers, take it from me. It's also usually pretty easy to tell when something is wrong, and there is rarely much wrong with a child who's alert, happy, eating and drinking.

WalkerWalking · 29/05/2022 12:38

He'll be fine. If it makes you feel better, I once called my sister in tears because my 4 month old baby shoved half a digestive into his mouth and he wasn't 17 weeks and I thought it was going to destroy his digestive tract. (spoiler alert: he's 15 now, and his digestive tract is fully functioning. So far as I'm aware 😬)
