Is this chickenpox!?

Just a little note...Currently waiting on a call back from the GP but thought I'd ask for other's opinions on here whilst we wait!

On Sunday (22nd May) my 11 month old wasn't herself at all. As the day went on she started to get a temperature, we gave calpol and kept an eye on her. She also refused most of her food, very unlike her. That night sleep was horrendous with hourly wake ups. This continued Monday and Tuesday (minus the fever, that only spiked on the original Sunday). On Wednesday, she was her usual happy self all day and then later on - when we went to bath her before bed - we noticed faint spots all over her back! We immediately thought chickenpox as her symptoms matched the early onset of it exactly as described on the NHS. We had another awful nights sleep too.

Yesterday she was again her usual happy self - although still not really eating much food and wanting a lot more breastfeeds. Sleep again was awful and for the third night in a row she was in our bed. I've checked her over last night and again this morning and it seems as though the spots have now disappeared!? I can feel some slight raised bumps on her arms bit these can only be seen in the light - they don't look like chickenpox spots. She's not been itching her skin at all, just itching her ears a lot.

I wondered if it was teething but calpol didn't seem to make any difference! And every other times she's teething we've not had this spotty rash on her back.

I've been keeping her home and away from classes as a precaution but she's going a bit stir crazy now as she's such an active baby and I feel awful if there's actually no reason to!

Just wondering if any parent can advise if this sounds similar to your experience of the start of chickenpox or not? I'm a FTM so it's all very new to me! Thanks!

Sounds more like a viral rash to me.

RandomQuest · 27/05/2022 11:42

Viral rash? My DS had similar at 10 months and we suspected the pox too but it just ended up being a viral rash and thankfully he recovered quickly. Ended up getting him vaccinated for chickenpox at 14 months as it gave us a scare!

@Hugasauras @RandomQuest thank you, we thought the same and it seems the GP does too.

@RandomQuest definitely made me want to get her vaccinated! Did it prevent your little one getting chickenpox? Xx

Get her vaccinated. I say this all the time, DTs who are older now had it when they were 5. It was awful. One ended up in hospital for two days with suspected sepsis, thankfully it wasn't but she did have infected spots. They were both off school for 3.5 weeks. It can be a really nasty illness. The second one didn't need hospital but she has got some really bad scarring.

I don't know why, I'm usually pretty clued up, but I had no idea there was a vaccine.

Hugasauras · 27/05/2022 12:58

DD(3) is vaccinated. We got her done about 11 months. There have been two outbreaks in her nursery cohort since then and she hasn't caught CP either time. Def worth doing, just based on the threads on here where people's holidays or other plans have been totally ruined by CP and they've lost a fortune! Aside from the fact it can be very unpleasant and result in scarring or worse.

RandomQuest · 27/05/2022 19:16

My eldest is 5 and has survived 2 class pox outbreaks without catching it so I’d say it works! Cheaper than a cancelled holiday, time off work etc etc

I could have written this myself.... exact same thing happened to my 6m on Monday, he still has red dots all over his arms and face but the first wave (on legs and stomach) have now gone. Took him to gp as he had the runs, but they said just a viral rash, normal response following the fever. The worst bit is that he has about four ulcers which I think is why he isn't feeding.

He is now eating a bit more, but still a bit unsettled and clingy. Hoping he will feel better by tomorrow!
