For those who use Kendamil baby formula

Hi on the Kendamil baby formula tub it says boil water then let it cook down for 30 minutes then add the powder.

I'm looking for some advice on what people do in terms of getting it ready as 30 minutes to cool water down seems like a long time for a baby to wait to have their milk? When my baby wants milk it’s literally right here and now within minutes he can’t wait 30 minutes for water to cool down. I can’t prepare in advance as I don’t know before when he wants milk. Can you make it and keep it at room temperature or in the fridge for a few hours before consuming it or not?

I bought a tommee tippee bottle warmer, can you put cold water in heat it in the machine and add the powder after?

Thank you in advance.

Its the same instructions as all non medical formula. Look up the NHS advice on preparing bottles. Some people also use the perfect prep machine.

It's the same for all formulas. We used to make them in advance with boiled water, then keep in the fridge and heat with the bottle warmer. The most important thing is that the water is above 70degrees when it hits the formula so that it kills any bacteria. We now have a nuby rapid cool which is the best thing I ever bought, bottle ready in a matter of minutes!

Okay thank you for the advice 👍🏻

I use a tommee tippee prep machine.

For instances I'm not home, 1/4 liquid is boiling, 3/4 is cooled boiled water.

This!

this machine will make up a bottle in 2 mins flat - life saver

Get a tommee tippee prep machine.
It will change your life. I've just been woken at 11.30 by my baby for a bottle and bottle made, fed and changed and back in bed by 11.50.
Also in the instructions it says shake the bottle after adding formula. Dont do this stir it, it dissolves the formula perfectly without creating lots of bubbles which can causes lots of wind for the baby.

Again when out and about, you can use 1 quarter boiling water kept in a flask and 3 quarters cooled boiled water.
Sometimes I use all boiling water then submerge the bottle in ice water to cool down if I've been caught out without the flasks.

I prepare my boys 6 bottles for the next day at night and store in the fridge, never made them fresh

You don't need a perfect prep machine. Just boil a small amount of water, pour in X millilitres to dissolve the powder and kill any bacteria, and then top with the remaining x millilitres of room temp water (cooled and boiled / filtered). It won't take more than a couple mins to prepare.

I use a Perfect Prep machine and I have no idea how I would manage without it.

I still prepare bottles the old fashioned way like I did with my older dc.
I prepare them all the morning and leave them in the fridge till needed.

Fleur405 · 27/05/2022 02:07

I have been using the nuby rapid cool (you get it in boots). As others have said rules are the same for all formula. Water must be at boiled and must be at least 70 degrees when added to powder in order to kill any bacteria that might be there. You can make it up in advance snd store in the fridge for up to 24 hours, just have to cool then reheat quickly so it’s not sitting around at a warm temperature for too long.

Kisskiss · 27/05/2022 02:20

I read It’s not advisable to put premixed formula in the fridge , especially if your baby is under 3 months.. i would boil my kettle before my baby is hungry, then make the bottle at 30 mins.. have it on standby till baby wAnts it.. which tended to be befire the 2h mark anyway ( which is when Ure meant to use it by)
now though, I bought the tommee tippe machine and it’s much easier!!

my friebd has a kettle which you can temp control and sets it at 70degrees, which also works

You need to allow the boiling water to cool. If you use it straight from boiling it destroys some of the nutrients in the milk.

I’m a first time mum so forgive me for the stupid questions.

Can I do this: boil water, let it cool down make a few bottles of milk and once it’s cooled down put them in the fridge and when I need them just heat them in the warmer.
If yes how long can I leave a bottle in the fridge?

Ideally , you’re meant to use the prepared formula in 2 hours.. I know people who leave formula in the fridge for up to a day , but it’s really not advisable if your baby is young as they are more susceptible to bugs and bacteria…
cab you get a kettle which can keep at s preset temp? Alternatively, I carry a thermos When I’m out with water that was boiled and cooled for 30 min .. and I use this water to make my bottles

lrm1808 · 28/05/2022 18:58

My HV said you can use the water any time from when the kettle is boiled up until that 30 min mark. Some people argue it ruins the nutrients in the formula but the Kendamums Facebook group have said that's more for formula in America which has a live ingredient that we don't use here (I think!). Anyway, using boiling water can degrade your bottles and obviously can risk you burning yourself so I think they advise that to cover their backs but sometimes I have had to use boiling and cool it down and baby has been fine.

What I have found useful is a flask. I am a big fan of the actual Thermos brand - they aren't the cheapest but I have used mine every day and I was scared the cheaper ones wouldn't stay hot enough. I boil a full kettle in the morning, leave it for 15-20 mins and pour it in the flask. I have one big one one that I keep at home which keeps water hot for 24 hours and a smaller one (500ml) which is I think lasts for 12 or 16 hours for when I'm out and about.

I always refill with fresh water before bed (I do night feeds the same way) and can confirm the water I pour out is still as hot as when I fill it in the morning. I then measure the remaining water from the kettle into smaller bottles to cool down. My baby is now on 210ml so I pour 100ml from the flask, mix the powder (I fill Tommee Tippee pots with 7 scoops in the morning) and then add the remaining 110ml premeasured cool water, or you could do a different hot to cold ratio depending on the temp your baby likes their bottle. Bottle made at the perfect temp in less than a minute! My baby sounds like yours, he goes from smiling and laughing to screaming for his bottle in 0.2 seconds so there's no chance I can keep him waiting.

Even if you didn't want to do the half half method if you have a flask of water there ready it will save you time (and electricity!) and then you can just cool down the bottle as normal.
