Tongue Tie Division - will it help??

Tongue tie stories please! DD has too many feeding problems at this point, she’s exclusively BF and absolutely refuses bottles. We’re going to get her minor posterior tongue tie divided next week and I’m terrified it will only make her more reluctant to feed and make things worse! But I’m running out of options to help her because I’ve tried so many things and she has poor weight gain issues and feeding aversion issues.

She’ll be 14 weeks when she goes for division

yes Yes yes! Helped so much and I did mine privately.

Honestly mine didn’t even seem to feel it. He was so much happier after :) and fed very quickly from then on

It might do, it might not. I have three children, all of whom had tongue ties and had them divided at various points (8 weeks, 6 days and 6 weeks). Only the one at 6 weeks saw any improvement in breastfeeding, although the one at 6 days was done so early because his tongue was basically pinned at the front and he couldn't even bottle feed like that, so he was a bit of a special case.

The procedure itself is very quick and straightforward, it's nothing to worry about and most babies are absolutely fine, I just don't want to get your hopes up that this will be the silver bullet for breastfeeding.

I definitely don’t think it’ll be a magic cure for everything, I’m just afraid she’ll become even more reluctant to feed but I’d hope it will help her latch because currently her latch is shallow, she sucks in her bottom lip, slips back and clicks

YES it did. We had it done at a similar age, quite late because I’d been told by several people (incl NICU nurses) that she didn’t have a tongue tie 🙄.

It took a week or so to make a difference. And then it was great. She stopped falling off the boob and she went up the centiles! I was able to space out feeds more.

SelfPortraitWithFoxInSmokingJacket · 25/05/2022 20:35

Yes - it wasn't a magic bullet, she never got to being EBF (it was around 12 weeks, as NHS wouldn't do it because she had to have formula in the early days because she was jaundiced) but it definitely improved her latch and meant she didn't get tired so quickly. And the operation itself was almost laughably minor - a few tears, stuck her on the boob and she was fine.

Good luck and bon courage - it is incredibly hard work, emotionally and practically, trying to feed a baby who just can't! Hope you're OK.

YES, 100% do it!! My boy had a posterior tie and we got it cut at 6 weeks privately. Best thing we did. It took him about 3 weeks to relearn how to feed correctly. He's 18 months now and still feeds just before bed 😊

NotintheUK · 25/05/2022 22:48

Helped my dc anyway, your post made me remember the clicking noises! Also the reflux!

It does take a week or so to make a difference.

I had it done partly because I was afraid of how it would affect him later on in life too.

NotintheUK · 25/05/2022 22:49

He cried more getting his jabs too, the procedure is very minor and over in a second.

My now 12yo had a tongue tie snipped at 10 weeks. It did really help him with his latch which was weak and as a result he took in less wind, which in turn made him happier over all.

pastaparadise · 25/05/2022 23:30

Ds1 struggled with breastfeeding and gaining weight. His tt was missed so only done at 5 weeks after starting combination feeding. We never got back to ebf but may be as my supply was affected by that point as I'd had mastitis etc.

Ds 2 we had done at 3 days. Ebf easily til 3.

In both cases the actual procedure was straightforward- cried to start with then settled on the boob and fine after.

Good luck. Feeding issues are exhausting!

CoffeeAndCurls · 25/05/2022 23:49

Thanks everyone, yes I can definitely say I’m exhausted from basically offering boob every hour for her to fight me and every three hours at night even though she wants to sleep through the night, and her falling asleep immediately once latched, but all to help her weight gain!
the private clinic said initially that it would just reattach because she has a lot of muscle tension also but it’s got to be worth a try!

My boy couldn't latch on at birth because he had tongue tie all it did was cause blisters on my nips and he was clicking, definitely do it! He latches on so much better and its not painful for either of us
