Son needs sunglasses for football

My son has been diagnosed with surfer’s eye… so needs to wear sunglasses all the time in summer months especially. He plays football competitively and so I need to find some good sunglasses with foam protection, sports strap which have high up protection that will fit his relatively small 10yr old head! I can’t find anything very easily. Maybe I need to go with him to an optician but I have never worn glasses so have no sense of which optician is likely to have best ‘sport’ and ‘child’ options. Any advice very great fully received!

You can get ones with a strap in decathlon but I don't know how either they or your child will survive if he gets a whack in the face.

Thank you, yes, I had seen these but I think you are write, bit too hard and pokey I think for football. We need something more substantial and perhaps a bit like mini ski goggles, but sunglasses shaped! Surely it exists but I have no idea where or how to search!

There is a football player who always wears glasses, Edgar Davis maybe he is called.

If you do some googling you might be able to find out what he wears.

You can get prescription sports goggles for football which are exactly what you need but with a tint rather than a prescription. Any large optician should be able to help you.

There are entire websites just for this sort of thing - you can buy plain glass / tinted / polarised goggles, not just prescription ones:
www.eyekit.co.uk/goggles/
www.gogglesnmore.com/prescription-sports-glasses-for-kids/
www.uksportseyewear.co.uk/section.php/26/1/junior-eyewear/

However I note that a few of the sites recommend you see an optician if the child is under 16.

My son needed prescription glasses for sport and they were very specific about the material both the frame and lenses were made out of. I can imagine sunglasses would be in the same.

We got ours from Boots.

Who specified - the optician?

Who diagnosed him? They would be the best person to start with. I would imagine it's not that unusual for a child diagnosed with this to also play sport. You'd imagine they must have the answer for you (well hopefully).

@Aitimummy the safety requirements for the glasses are often set by the sport authorities. For football its the FA.

You can get tinted contact lenses, I have a friend who wears them for sport due to a dilated pupil

lorisparkle · 24/05/2022 20:10

Yes sorry I was not clear - my son's football coach told us they had to be specialist sports glasses due to the requirements from the club.
