Toddler head bump - what to do

My toddler (2 last month) misjudged a step off a kids ride this morning about 7 hours ago and fell head first into the edge of the ride next to it. I feel awful as I’m usually there to catch him but I was putting my bag down and it all happened so quickly.

A little but nasty looking bruise appeared on his forehead straight away along with an egg shaped lump. He cried for a few minutes then just wanted to get back on the ride.

He’s seemed absolutely fine since apart from this lump. I just have no idea whether I should call 111 or not and I’m just very on edge.

I think normally it's fine as long as they don't vomit or get unusually sleepy afterwards but if you're unsure I'd call and ask. Twice I've had to take my daughter to A&E after a bump where she vomited straight after. They just observe for a few hours and then release them. The guilt is horrible but there is no way to prevent accidents like this so don't beat yourself up x

www.nhs.uk/conditions/head-injury-and-concussion/

we send this link to parents if their child has a head bump (nursery) Most head bumps are fine just look out for the symptoms listed a seek medical help. If you need reassurance call 111 for advice.

If he's fine, just keep an eye on him and don't bother with medical advice - they will almost certainly just monitor him.
I've only ever taken the kids to A&E once following a head bump, and he was blacking out for a fraction of a second every few minutes, and spectacularly vomited. It was very clear something was wrong. Hospital kept him in overnight following a CT scan, but just roused him every hour initially, stretching to every couple of hours.

The egg is good. Dd managed to do similar a couple of times and it’s horrible but kids are generally made to take a couple of knocks.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/head-injury-and-concussion/ read up on the signs of concussion, keep a close eye and try not to fret too much.

If he’s eating, drinking and playing, and hasn’t vomited, he will most probably be OK.

mommaof1 · 21/05/2022 18:35

Look out for signs of concussion for the first 24 hours, my nephew fell over and smacked his head on the corner of a pure concrete step and cut his head open they went A&E because the cut needed gluing, he didn't get any concussion just a sore head! Am sure he'll be ok, if not then you know to go A&E look out for things like, drowsiness, vomiting, not walking straight all that stuff, hope he's ok

I took my DS to A&E when he was a toddler, as he fell and had an egg sized lump, like yours.
After being checked thoroughly and asked if there was any vomiting/ passing out etc., they said a lump like an egg is normally ok, they'd be more likely to worry if they had a bad fall and no lump at all.

Egg lump is normal and it sounds like he’ll be fine if he’s not being sick or dizzy etc. that is what we were told when our 3 year old head butted an iron gate - egg lump had the mark of the metal work in it.
Fall on the back of the head - immediate A& E. The front is the thickest and strongest part of the skull so usually fine, but a fall/hit to the back could be far more serious.
