Hi, feel a bit of a chump asking this (sorry, been looking for an hour and not found an answer in old threads- probably pg brain), particularly at this stage!
So, for last 2 yrs been using Bambino Mios/tot bots fluffles/bamboozle/etc and never questioned BM's initial advice of washing at 60 and using nappy powder (Boots own brand) in with pooey wash- no soaking in our house. Wee's are mostly what we deal with now, which get washed at a 40 without extra chemicals. New baby due May, and now realising 60 + chemicals sounds a bit of overkill now I'm not all paranoid like 1st time around. Any advice/thoughts on this? I'm thinking I should be either washing at 60 OR using chemicals- and anything to get our utility bills down
TIA

I wash at 60 and use (currently) Ariel. I don't wet soak either and poo and the liner goes down the loo. I would ditch the chemicals and wash at 60.

preggersagain · 12/01/2008 13:53

i wash at 30 usually with a once a month 60 blitz- no chemicals and use ecoballs [slattern] !!!

mumofk · 12/01/2008 13:56

Thanks for advice so quickly Nab!
We use fleece liners these days so poo just falls off (mind you, she mostly poos in nappy for childminder so think she's not taken to toilet enough/right time!) but used flushable paper liners for ages.

I wash mainly at 40 and 60 now and again...I have switch to Bio now for my nappies and found it much better. It has stopped the rashes she was getting.

Im on my third baby now, poo goes down the loo and everything gets bunged in at 40. (ahem usually with everything else inc dh s shirts etc etc) it all seems to come out clean enough (I'm a slattern too)

appledumpling · 12/01/2008 18:16

I wash at 60 with non-bio. Poo and the liner goes down the loo.

This is baby No.1 and I hadn't even considered washing at 40 but it obviously gets them clean so will give it a go.

JingleyJen · 12/01/2008 18:21

we wash at 40 most of the time but once a month (ish) we do a 60 wash use fairey non bio.
we use disposable liners so poo goes in the toilet (I rinse the nappy in the loo if there is anything that is not on the liner.)

In the summer they hang outside and look white - in the winter they are on the radiator and can look a little less white but still clean.

cold rinse, then a 40 wash and a once a month blitz on a 60. use persil non bio, have tried bio but he got a ickle rashy so back to non bio.... nooooooooooooo soaking.

CarGirl · 12/01/2008 21:33

dry pail, cold rinse, wash at 40 (along with other whites) sometimes blast at 50 or use non-bio as dd has stinky amonia wees, soap nuts are absolutely great on nappies too.

mumofk · 13/01/2008 10:32

Thanks all for the advice, when this box of chemicals gone they will not be replaced, and DH (in charge of laundry in our house) is on intructions not to go above 40!
I love mumsnet!

I sling my washables in at 40 unl;ess I have major poo stains to deal with, and I use surf biological liquid - although ds2 is 21 months, so not a tinsy baby. Poo and line goes down the loo, in the main.

colditz · 13/01/2008 10:38

I don't presoak either, I must admit, and if they only have wee on they go in with the rest of my wash.

You get a lot less precious about where wee goes when you have potty trained one!

coby · 13/01/2008 15:56

I wash all our nappies at 40C as well just with a cold rinse first.

The only time I use chemicals is for the nappies in the trial kit which are used on several babies although I occassionally soak our own nappies in tea tree or lavender oil.

BevB · 13/01/2008 19:23

Different answer to everyone else here, I dry pail, then rinse (in washing machine) & washed all nappies at 60 in non bio (or soapnuts) up until dd2 was 3 months old as I had read you should do this (don't know where) then all of them at 40 unless bad nappy rash or jabs then 60 with the pre rinse. I still do the odd 60 wash with a glug of vinegar in the conditioner drawer.

nappyaddict · 03/02/2008 23:28

first i rinse all the nappies under the cold water tap (not hot - it sets stains). then i put them all in the nappy bucket which is filled with cold water and white wine vinegar. i don't use tea tree or lavender or anything as my nappies are coloured and it affects the colour but i would if i only had white or cream ones. i wet pail cos it breaks down the urine and loosens stains so the nappies last longer. i also use white wine vinegar in the conditioner compartment to make them soft as fabric conditioner coats the fibres and so reduces absorbancy. i'm another fan of line drying as much as possible, but if not then i line dry inside on an airer. i don't radiate or tumble dry as this can damage them in the long run. oh and i wash at 30 degrees.

nappyaddict · 03/02/2008 23:34

i use a 1/4 of a cup of powder or half a tablet . and i do a prewash and extra rinse at the end.
