Taking ‘Main’ Pram on holiday

Wasnt sure how to phrase this as you can probably tell!
but essentially about to go on holiday abroad with 13 month old and want to take our pram.

The plan has always been to take our existing pram - mamas and papas xt3 flip, fully collapses.

However, I know most people buy a lighter weight stroller pram for holidays. I didnt feel this was necessary for us but am i missing something??

We intend to use the pram up to steps and have a pram bag to put it in to go in the hold.

Are there downsides to doing this?

If you do take it, invest in a good quality bag for it. I saw them throwing my cheap stroller onto the back of the vehicle that transports luggage to the plane and then it saw it fall off. This is why I only took a cheap one with me.

The downside is that if you watch what will happen to your pram with the luggage handlers, you might wish you'd bought a cheap stroller instead!

I don't trust anything that goes in the hold - that was the main reason for us buying a light pram that we could take in the plane with us. It's also easier with small hire cars etc. It isn't an essential though, just a nice to have. What I will say is that I have found that I now use the light travel buggy all the time at home so it was a really good investment for us.

You have to leave your pram at the boarding gate. I think it's OK if its not really heavy.

Travelled a lot with mine when they were little and always take to Yoyo which goes in the over head locker. It's been a godsend.

You can't always take a big buggy to the steps of the aircraft, you might need to leave it at the steps and you won't get it back until baggage reclaim. It's a right pain...

Magicfeet11 · 19/05/2022 10:21

Should say, leave it at the gate

I also find a stroller easier in restaurants etc as they are smaller to park up at the table or take on any shuttle buses etc depending on what you are doing on holiday xx

We always took cheap strollers, didn't want my main one broken.

Thanks everyone. I guessed it would be because of the baggage handlers.

I have got a substantial pram bag for it to go in which should protect it to an extent but it’s not hard so wont protect it fully.

The main reason i want to take our pram is the place we’re going is cobbled streets/ uneven paths that i dont think i lighter weight stroller would cope very well with

Plus we’re self catering so the big basket underneath is always handy for shopping/ days out.

Also thanks for the heads up that we may not be able to use to the plan steps. Will take carrier too

We always took our main pram with us, it was a bugaboo bee.

It must have done 30+ flights, went into the hole as it was with no pram bag, and never had any damage.

Usually we wheeled it to the gate or plane steps, usually it would be waiting at the equivalent place on return. Once we had to schlep to oversize baggage.

ProseccoStorm · 19/05/2022 10:41

Hold....it went into the hold without a pram bag.

Caspianberg · 19/05/2022 12:04

The Main reason is I want to have the pram straight off the plane.
Some places it’s fine as short walk or you get it back at steps, but recently at London standsted all prams were taken to the luggage belts with cases, meaning everyone had 90 min queuing up for passport control having to carry heavy tired children. I was glad we took the babyzen yo-yo onboard as hand luggage

Also many travel locations mean smaller hotels, more public transport, in tiny cafes then at home so a small compact fold suits.

We have taken the mountain buggy large pram once when we needed the large wheel options and that was fine. But we checked it in with suitcase at the start, and only took sling through airport. I think this is maybe a better option if large pram as no faffing when boarding and you have sling on you suitable.
