Cereal up nose

DS 2.5 stuck half a cheerio up his nostril. We tried getting him to blow out of one nostril holding the other closed. By the time we managed to get him to lie down to attempt blunt tweezers it was no longer visible but hasn't come out.

He's happy playing, not in pain, has sneezed a couple of times but this is normal for him as he is a bit hayfevery at the moment. Nose isn't bleeding or runny. He's eating and drinking as normal.

Do I leave it be? Hope it dissolves?

It could cause an infection if it stays up there. The first thing they try at the hospital is a bit like mouth to mouth, you blow into his mouth and close the clear the nostril and it should pop out by itself.

If that doesn't work they normally use an instrument but it's a lot more traumatic for the child than the first option!

I wouldn't just leave it. I'd get it seen by a medic. Agree with PP.

Although I don't think I'd attempt the blowing into mouth technique myself. I'd leave that to a trained professional personally.

I am not advising you to do this! It could be a terrible idea. But when my DS shoved something up his nose I got the Hoover straight away and sucked it back out 🤭. He was fine, no kids harmed in the process.

Go to minor injuries or A&E. That pretty much guarantees that you will sit there for three hours and just as someone calls you, he'll do a massive sneeze and produce the cheerio.

We already did the blowing into the mouth thing.
I've called 111 and they're going to ring back. I'd really prefer to avoid a&e if possible obviously.

For clarity a doctor won't blow in to your child's mouth- they get the parent to!

No you have to go to a and E. My youngest did this with a raisin when she was 2. She had to go to theatre to have it removed

My son shoved a load of sweetcorn up his nose, so much that his face started swelling under his eyes. He went to A and E where they sucked it out with a clear suction hose. The doctors took great delight in counting each corn piece as it travelled down the tube. Son thought it hilarious thankfully.

Stick him in the bath and get him to blow bubbles. I'd take him swimming before I bothered with the hospital.

Hi all. Thank you for responding to my thread and I just wanted to leave an update in case anyone else ever loses half a cheerio. 111 called back yesterday evening and said to speak to the GP today, and observe in case of nose bleeds or anything else concerning take him in to a&e.
Had a telephone consult with GP today and they said as it's a small piece and not a whole cheerio it's most likely either been sniffed up into the top of the nose and down the throat to be swallowed, or its dissolved. They said any bleeding or pus from the nose to contact them again but otherwise hopefully no harm done.

I'm glad it's sorted @PintOfBovril - and good too know, as bizarrely later that same day I managed to cough/snort a bit of kiwi fruit that got stuck inside my nasal cavity... And really hurt but wouldn't come out. I've ignored it and it finally went away (downwards I think).

I was tempted to get DH to do the nose blowing trick, but was not brave enough!
