Ultra fussy about food

DS is almost 4. He has always been a terribly fussy eater and has recently decided to stop eating about half of his already very limited diet. For the past 9 months or so(?) he will have a meltdown if food breaks or falls on the floor. To the point where he will get so upset, he doesn't want to eat any more and refuses to eat "broken" food.

His dad and I aren't neat or fussy eaters, we don't get cross about food falling on the floor or things being spilled. I usually do a good job of staying calm... but I'm 39wks+ with DC2 and tonight I basically lost my sh*t. DS was really hungry at tea time, tried to fork a fish finger, it broke, he burst into tears/rage and didn't want to eat. After 10minutes of bawling, he asked to sit in my lap and for me to "help him" (i.e. feed him) his tea.

The broken food thing is driving me crazy. I unwrap his flapjacks and peel babybel like a bomb disposal expert so they don't break. I just wish he would chill out about food!! And maybe try eating something other than weetabix, pasta/pesto, fish fingers and marmite sandwiches. He eats the same nutritionally devoid menu everyday. I have no idea how he doesn't have scurvy.

Has anyone else gone through extreme fussy-ness like this? What did you do?

I can 100% guarantee you that this has nothing to do with food and everything to do with the new baby that's about to arrive. He's feeling scared and out of control and he's projecting that anxiety onto the one thing he has complete control over - what food goes into his body. I'd recommend going massively OTT with the love and reassurance and let the food thing go for a few months.
