Developmental Hip Dysplasia in 2 year old? Anyone with experience?

I noticed a long while ago that my daughter has what I like to call an extra bum cheek which makes her gluteal creases uneven. Upon googling it seems that gluteal creases being uneven seem to indicate hip dysplasia more so than thigh creases. Does anyone have any experience of this in a toddler rather than a baby?

I have already contacted the GP and he’s referred her for an x-ray without even seeing her which is fair enough - but I just want to be prepared for possible outcomes. The likelihood of it being HD? And if so how is it treated in a older toddler who is already walking and running around? It’s going to break my heart if she needs to be in the big cast thing that’s seen on all the photos I’ve googled!

anyone with experience who can share I would be very grateful!

hi, my 8-months old has just been diagnosed with the DHD and straight away sent to have an X-Ray done, and quickly referred to a clinic and a surgery booked in July followed by up to 3 months in plaster. What is the outcome of your diagnosis ?

Hi, my 13 month old granddaughter was diagnosed with DHD in October last year. She has undergone an Xray and is now due for surgery at the end of this month. She is bum shuffling, and trying to crawl, but tends to drag left leg, which is the one with the displaced hip. We have found groups on Facebook that have lots of information and lived in experiences that are very helpful. I would suggest that if you are on Facebook, you do a search for these groups. Also, there is a charity called STEPS which is extremely helpful. Here is a link

First thing is not to over worry, I know it’s easier said than none.

my son had a lot of surgery as a child on his leg, and is facing another now as an adult. I know it was for a different condition, but I can help advise on preparing you and your baby for the hospital stay.

my nieces little girl had a cast fitted at 22 months, it was hard work simply because she was so heavy. So with that in mind make sure speak to the hospital/Red Cross about getting a suitable push chair for her.

if she’s not already, try and get her potty trained, it will be much easier for you and more comfortable for her.

you will need lots of suitable clothing, again the nurses are amazing at helping with that.

try and plan activities for her todo when sat still, though believe me, children soon learn to adapt and she will drag herself about if need be. I’ve seen child sat astride skate boards 😂

it will be hard, it will break your heart, it will push your patience to the limit, but believe me, it will be worth it. The times I’ve been in hospital with my son and seen so many children go through this, but it will be worth it xx

Steps are very good. I forgot about them, they couldn’t really help me with my son his condition is very rare, but I know a lot of mums have contacted them

Thank you soo much for the advice, did your niece had the cast on without going through surgery ?and how can I contact Red Cross

Mummumgem · 07/05/2023 23:43

Yes she had surgery, but I believe it can be corrected with just a brace and physio I assume it’s dependent on how severe it is

most towns have a Red Cross, just google one near you. If they don’t have the equipment you need they can point you in the right direction. They provided my niece with a special pushchair and potty, it might also be worth checking out the car seat,

I wouldn’t worry to much until you know exactly what treatment she will be having
