Padding around travel cot for 2 year old

Hi everyone

looking for some advice.

We are buying a new house and renovating it, we are currently staying at my in laws in the meantime for the short term. The room I am staying in with my in laws fits a travel cot in there which my 2 year old son has been sleeping in fine. However, it just about slots into a gap that’s next to a radiator and a wall on the other side. I never have the radiator on anyway however we’ve had to put blankets wedged in between these two sides as my DS has thrown his head back and due to the proximity of the wall he’s hit it on the wall. I’m just wondering if wedging blankets between two sides of the travel cot is safe or if it will trap heat? There’s no other way we can rearrange the room unfortunately and the wall/radiator is about 2cm if that away from the sides of the cot. I’m not sure what is best to to!

Any advice?

No not safe.

Can he sleep in your bed?

HotChocolate16 · 08/05/2022 15:33

Yes he technically could, it’s just we’ve never co slept like that before. So I was just worried about starting that habit. Also we leave him in his cot to fall asleep and leave the room, wouldn’t be able to do that with the bed as he would be up and down but i guess it is an option if it is safer.

I wouldn't have thought it would be a huge issue at 2 providing the ballets were completely secure.

Blankets not ballets!

Care to explain why you think that?

@HotChocolate16

I can't see the problem with putting something between the cot & the radiator, but I'd go with something like a pillow or foam changing pad just in case DS was to pull it out & into his cot.

I was thinking about air flow and the heat that would be generated into the cot

HotChocolate16 · 08/05/2022 16:09

It would be two walls that would need padding - the radiator one and the other wall. The other 2 would be exposed fine if that helps? Well the third side of the cot is against my mattress but it doesn’t cover the whole of the mesh wall, just a strip of it

the heat that would be generated into the cot

the heat is generated in the cot anyway..
it isn’t generated into the cot any more than it would have been anyway

the issue is if dc presses their face up against it, is it breathable however at 2 years old they are well old enough to move themselves if they can’t breathe.

your plan is fine OP

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/05/2022 16:13

I wouldn’t as not safe

tho sure he will stop throwing his head against wall if hurts him

so he will prob do a few times then stop

HSKAT · 08/05/2022 16:17

But two sides are covered so no airflow, so will that not create heat as it can't escape from two of the biggest sides?

BoredYummyMummy · 08/05/2022 16:19

The flow comes from the fact the body warms the air then it rises and draws air in from the sides, provided the other size are free flowing then that aspect is fine.

BoredYummyMummy · 08/05/2022 16:19

Sides not size

PeterpiperpickedapeckofpickledPEPPAS · 08/05/2022 16:25

Why don’t you just put him to bed facing the other way? So head at the other end of the cot with 2 open sides. Less chance of him hitting his head on things that way. At 2 he’ll move if he’s not comfy anyway. Does he not just climb out of the travel cot if he wants to come and find you?

DappledShade · 08/05/2022 16:45

It sounds fine to me, as long as you stuff them down far enough so he can't grab them. If you are worried could you put the cot just outside the door in the hall/landing and leave it open if there is space for it? He is 2 so doesn't necessarily need to be in with you.

MadameDragon · 08/05/2022 16:56

He’s two years, not two months so if he gets too hot he’ll wake up and cry I would have thought.
