I should know this as I've been through it once already! But just can't remember...
When would you expect to hear from new school in terms of induction days, term start arrangements etc for reception intake? I'm particularly keen to understand their approach to staggering or not as nursery are chasing to know what last day will be etc

In term 6, so after the half term.

Not until after the May half term holiday.

You can send them full time from day one regardless of any staggered arrangements at the school. It’s totally impractical for working parents to use a staggered start to schooling especially as children who have been in full time nursery for several years will be use to a full day and get confused by a combination of school and childcare.

I think it is unlikely you will hear until after half term, because schools don't yet know which teachers they will have in September. They will usually wait until the resignation date (half term) has passed to finalise plans for who teaches which class. They also need to wait until they have their final list of children to decide who starts on what day if they stagger.

We were sent all our dates and information on offer day in a welcome
email to the school. We’ve got a new reception parents meeting at the school in June

each area and school is different obviously but they don’t do much until term 6 in terms of induction.

I’ve got an older Ds too and our experience is pretty much the same this time 2 weeks of staggering mornings one week and afternoons the other( won’t know which way round until later this month).

Wow @Oizys that's an organised school!
Thanks everyone for your experiences.

Very school dependent- and next week is SATs week so they'll be busy with that as well.

There were no staggering arrangements for DS this year- full time every day from the get go

We got a welcome pack this Tuesday just gone.

Maybe you can technically send them in from day one from 9-3.30 but it might not be that nice for the child if everyone else is doing mornings only and the teachers are spending the afternoons doing home visits.

I've already sent admissions arrangements to all the new families in my school for this reason- they can give nursery plenty of notice and maybe take a couple of afternoons of annual leave while the settle the children in.

We heard in June last year I think.. but you should be able to find term dates for next year on their website. Ours have the next school year up now.

Even if it’s staggered and reception start a bit later for example, you really don’t want your child going to nursery one day & starting school the next. I’d aim for them to leave the week before the school term starts & have that time to get their brains ready to deal with the next big change in their life.. we pulled our DD out of nursery a full week before & took some time off work. We had a nice week doing some special things together before she went off to school.. 😭

When DT’s started reception the majority went full time from day one even though the school operated a three week staggered start. The majority had two full time working parents without endless amounts of holiday entitlement. DT’s left nursery on the Friday and started school, full time on the following Monday.
