I am an old hand at cloth I have to say and know practically every trick in the book but ds3 woke up yeaterday witha bright red bleeding bottom Have been using sudocrem and have just been to get some metanium. Humming and haaing over whether disps (someone gave me some!) or cloth to heal it.

Any thoughts? He is crying btw Not now but when he is awake

Poor little DS . Have you any ideas why it came on so suddenly? How old is he?

I find sudocrem pretty useless, metanium is much better IME.

I would give as much nappy off time as possible and use fleece liners. I have used metanium with fleece liners without any problems with absorbancy reduction.

I personally would avoid disposables and just change the nappy frequently, don't like the harshness of the papery disposable next to rash also prefer to keep the chemicals away from the skin. I've used disposables with a fleece liner sucessfully though to keep the skin dry.

Also if he seems really distressed I would give him some calpol or neurofen for the pain - I had to once with DD1'snappy rash and I'm glad I did.

Thanks

He normally wears fuzzis and have been changing them every hour or so to keep his bottom really dry but he wears onelife, fleece liner and a rikki at night for absorbency but last night I ran out of rikkis so I put a disp on him - but had also left him with dh the whole day before so not sure if he changed him very oftern I haven't changed my washing powder or anything - just flared up really badly. Think (wracks brain) its called amonionitis

I have been giving him calpol

He is 9 months this week.

sounds like a combination of possible infrequent changing and a change of night nappy . Maybe he is teething too?

far too late for me to deal with long words I'm afraid . I should think you would need to rule out thrush etc too just to be sure.

Hopefully it will recover quickly. If I put my DD in a disposable I put a fleece liner inside it - it really helps keep her dry and she doesn't get 'sticky disposable bum'. Might tbe worth a try and see if it works for you too.

has anyone mentioned brewing a cup of chamomile tea and washing his botty with the tea... Tis miraculous wonderful stuff. And metanium is good too.

I found raw egg white good for sore bums, make sure dc is not allergic first though!

Just pat on to make a sort of 'varnish' and store rest in fridge, lovely and cool for next time.

I find citrus often does this - well not bleeding but a really red mark that lasts for days and is almost like a burn. You need to watch using creams too constantly as they can block the air from getting to the skin, it's a tricky balancing act and it's definitely worth cleaning it all off with chamomile, and allowing him to have some no-nappy time. Agree that fleece or mircrofibre next to the skin can help them to keep dry. You can soak a liner in chamomile and put it on him for a while too. Hope he's better..

A nurse I know who works on SCBU reccomends use of orabase on nappy rash - you can get it from the pharmacist. It's a protective paste and works really well.

Good luck, hope he gets better.

DS always finds oat baths soothing when his bum is in a state I dunno if that is any help.
