Chunky baby! Advice please

DS was born 9lb2oz and has gained weight steadily since then. He’s formula fed and we never over feed, he pushes the bottle away he never takes more than needed

He’s 5months now and I last got him weighed around 8 weeks and he was 14lb!

He’s bigger now and is quite long too, he’s in 6-9m babygrows

So many people at the baby and mum groups we go to comment on how big he is alongside some distant family

No health professionals have raised concerns. The nurse I seen a week or two ago (for different reason) said he’s healthy and that’s what everyone likes to see

I don’t know why the comments are bothering me? I had weight issues growing up and I know he’s a baby and won’t know but when people just say “wow he’s big” I think he’s so much more than his size?

am I doing something wrong I feel like people are looking at me like I’m over feeding but I’m really not? Advice please ??

People never have much to say about a baby.

And if he's bigger than most, that's what they'll comment on. Just the same as if he was tall, had unusual eyes, bright spiky red hair, a mop of long black hair etc

If you're letting him lead in feeding, then it's fine.

myyellowcar · 05/05/2022 22:26

I had this, he seemed huge and I know some people (cough cough my mother) did think he was over fed. But he was never sick and our health visitor had no concerns about his feeding pattern. When he became mobile he slimmed right out and is now just a normal size. Carry on as you are! Now half his trousers don’t fit because they’re too big around the waist.

nanananananana2 · 05/05/2022 23:14

@myyellowcar a few friends have said the same when he moves he’ll even out!

i don’t mind him being chunky at all and he hAs never been sick! The comments just annoy me a bit

feeling like people are judging

My first born was breastfed and used to put a pound a week on. He was HUGE.
He is an adult now and 6' 8"! It was who he was meant to be!
You just enjoy your little squidge and take pride in what a great job you are doing!

Twixie2022 · 05/05/2022 23:19

My DS was massive. So chunky. He evened out when he started moving. He’s 2 now and the second youngest at his minders and is the tallest by far. Honestly do not worry, if a doctor/nurse isn’t worried then you try not to be.

Verbena87 · 05/05/2022 23:22

Mine was over 10lbs and stayed an absolute chunk until he started walking/running really: gorgeous roly-poly thighs and dimples for days.

He’s 4 now, runs/hops/climbs everywhere and is skinny as a rake.

maybe he’ll even out one day 🤷‍♀️.

honestly, if you’re not worried and health visitor/doctor isn’t, you’re grand.

Hallibob · 05/05/2022 23:23

I also had a massive baby...I didn't see it at the time but now I look back at photos he had rolls and rolls of fat and was basically round 😂

He evened out eventually once he became mobile. He stayed exactly the same weight for about a year and just got taller! Now he's well in proportion but still very tall for a 3 year year old.

Feckingfeck · 05/05/2022 23:30

DS was big, DD is small.

All children are different even as babies so i wouldn't worry about it if the health professionals aren't.

Its all to do with the pattern of his growth rather than how big he is at a specific time compared to others. That's the joy of growth charts- compare him to him!

I see it as ... if he gets unwell he has more to sustain himself 😉

Enjoy him, they grow up so quick.

In the most gentlest way of telling you - you are totally projecting your own issues here.

Babies are MEANT to be fat.

Babies also come in all different sizes. I am speaking myself as a 99%er from birth, shes slowed down now approaching two.

Please dont worry, people comment all sorts on babies as its a good conversation starter, especially in groups. Ive always been told how tall DC is.

I love seeing a chunky monkey!! My ds was born at 7 pounds but just kept growing and growing, he got huge, he was on the 97th percentile at one point. He's now very tall, just like his dad !

Harrysmummy246 · 06/05/2022 18:57

my 98th centile for weight chunk but 91`st or lower for length was a 'good advert' for BF at 7ish months, virtually skipped 6-9 mo clothes etc.
He's now 4. Tall but no rolls anywhere- he stretched out about 2.5 years. He was 8lb9 when I was induced at 38wks

Somebody has to be top of the chart, it's how it works.

shivawn · 06/05/2022 19:39

I wouldn't worry at all, sounds like he is thriving!
My son is the same. He was in 6-9 month babygros at 4 months and now at 7 months he's in 12-18 months. Completely healthy thank god, just big and strong for his age! I love having a big baby to be honest!

AfterGlow87 · 06/05/2022 20:27

My baby was born 2 months early on the 12th centile and is now 12 months old and on the 75th centile for weight and 91st for height! I get multiple comments about how he’s “big” but he’s mostly tall and his weight has remained the same for the last couple of months. I’m delighted as he was growth restricted and love my chunky monkey. People always have comments, whether they’re big or small - you just can’t win. Enjoy your lovely baby

My daughter was born exactly 9 pounds. She was also in 6-9 month clothes by 4 months old and is in 12-18 now at 8 months old. She does have some rolls but she's also incredibly long. She has always looked about double her actual age.

I totally understand how you feel. I get lots of comments about over feeding (she eats very healthily and always stops when she's full). I think it's harder to have a bigger than average girl. I definitely sense judgement from other parents at baby groups at times. I've stopped letting it bother me. She's big and beautiful and has the most magical smile in the world. She's a very content and happy - an absolute sweetheart. There are lots of advantages to having a bigger baby :)

Amipreg1 · 06/05/2022 22:35

My DS was 9lb14 when he was born and he really was a little chunk. He wasn't very long either. He definitely started to even out when he was toddling around and now at age 7 he is a perfectly average size for his age. I wouldn't worry!

I have had one of each and sadly you get comments either way! Guess its just natural response.

Enjoy your little chunk. Mine is now 10! But his tiny sister is almost 1 😢 they grow up so fast!

danny735 · 07/05/2022 09:42

I should add - I did feel a little bit robbed of the tiny baby stage. My daughter is likely to be my only child. They say it goes so fast but she grew at twice the normal rate and it did make me feel sad. I adore her and wanted to soak up every minute and it felt like we were skipping stages. But those are my feelings - I have to move past them and remember she's happy, healthy and thriving.

SecondhandTable · 07/05/2022 16:36

I've got a biggun atm. 8lb 6 at birth, he's almost 7 months and been in 9-12 month clothes for awhile now. He's tall and chunky, takes after his dad haha. My eldest was modestly sized and at 4 is petite, both height and weight - to the point where she's dropping centiles and is a cause for concern. I agree people comment either way but most people think it's good for babies to be big tbh so they're saying it like praise! My boy is mostly breastfed as well and still very big and they say you can't overfeed a breastfed baby. Conversely my daughter was bottle fed and she used to drink a lot more formula than the pack recommended and she still never got above the 50th centiles even at her biggest!
