My son took his first steps two months ago and is now obsessed with walking. However, he trips over quite a lot and has hit his head (both front and back) four times now on hard surfaces (tarmac and concrete three times and a tiled floor once) resulting in large eggs and bruises on his head. I’m really struggling to cope with the anxiety of watching him walk and run around, wondering what horrible injury he’s going to cause himself next. I’m absolutely terrified that all these knocks to the head could cause him to become brain damaged.
I do try to keep him on the grass as much as possible but he often seems to make a beeline for the hard surfaces. I spoke to a friend with a son of similar age and she said her son has never hit his head - he tends to land on his hands and knees instead. It’s left me wondering why my son keeps landing on his head, the worst possible place.
Is there anything I can do to try and prevent the head injuries - such as making him wear a helmet when he’s walking?! Another idea I had was reins - do they help prevent falls? He is very independent though and loves exploring, so I’m not sure they would work.
I’m going out of my mind with worry, please help.
