Health concern - tongue out

Hi all, my 3 month old daughter is almost always keeping her tongue out. I made the grave mistake to go to google and read this is typical for Down syndrome. Our pregnancy screening didn’t suggest such diagnosis but I appreciate it can’t be entirely ruled out. I do notice she has a lower nasal bridge. Could you please let me know if you think we might have been misdiagnosed? Attaching two picture. TIA!

There are many syndromes out there
Which can have features
Is she eating and feeding OK?
Smiling?
Any concerns ?

Toddlerteaplease · 03/05/2022 19:51

If she had Down Syndrome it would have been picked up at birth. As there are many other indicators. Single palmer crease, sandal gap, hypotonia, epicanthic folds. Etc.

Not generally, she is a happy baby - eating well, smiles a lot.

She's a gorgeous baby, nothing from the photos to suggest anything else.

I'm not a professional but she doesn't look like she has DS to me. Maybe she just has a large tongue?

teomama · 03/05/2022 20:01

Likely - just got majorly scared we might have missed it as I am an older mother :(

Welcome to the burden of child-induced health anxiety. I had it with DS1. I was worried about every little thing and Google made it 100x worse. It got better for me eventually though and I'm no longer as anxious.

As PP have said, it would have got picked up at birth. DS is very apparant and I'm sure you or someone else would have known for sure if she had DS by 3mo.

Beautiful baby @teomama

I can’t see any features that would suggest Downs and she would have been checked for things like single palmar crease etc by the midwife following birth so try not to worry and enjoy your gorgeous baby.

Bornsloppy · 03/05/2022 21:06

My DC2 did that a lot. I think he liked how it felt! Babies are weird.

WhatNoReally · 03/05/2022 21:10

It's a stage some of them go through. My baby did. Remember babies explore with the mouths as they are sensitive.

LBB2020 · 04/05/2022 11:59

Gorgeous baby! As the parent of a child with Down syndrome, I agree with others that you are worrying about nothing!
Also to add, my child with DS doesn’t have his tongue hanging out. It’s usually to do with low muscle tone

teomama · 04/05/2022 12:43

Thanks everyone for your insights! Health anxiety is a real burden.

Tongue thrust is a thing in small children

My son went through a phase like this at 3.5 months, we were on away on holidays at the time and I remember how hard it was to get a photo of him without his tongue out! He's 7 months now and never does it anymore.

Your daughter is beautiful!
