Unexplained temp for 6 days not getting better

Starlight86 · 01/05/2022 14:57

So DD (22 months) has been unwell for 6 days now starting Tuesday night.

We have been managing with calpol and ibruphen which is bringing it back down but then it will go right back up again when her medicine is due.
Shes barely eating or drinking. Still getting some wet nappies.
She is very lethargic and upset all the time.

Of course docs are closed until Tuesday.

How long should a temp last for?

Have you seen a GP? You should only be using calpol and nurofen together if you have seen a GP and even then you need to see a GP after 3 days.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 01/05/2022 15:24

Spare that if she is lathergic pick up your changing bag and go straight to A and E now. Don’t wait.

Could be a UTI. Or tonsillitis. Have you looked at her tonsils?

Aquamarine1029 · 01/05/2022 15:25

Have you not been to a doctor already?

Northernsoullover · 01/05/2022 15:27

There is always 111. Ring now.

Starlight86 · 01/05/2022 15:29

We haven’t seen a gp, I felt like I was handling it until sat morning when it seemed to get worse.

im on the phone to 111

Conniebanana · 01/05/2022 15:33

I was about to say take her in to be seen especially if lethargic

PlantingTrees · 01/05/2022 15:37

111 might be able to get you seen at an out of hours GP rather than having to go to A&E. If they don’t phone back quickly I’d take her to A-&E

MGee123 · 01/05/2022 15:45

Take her to A&E now, don't mess around waiting for 111. They are only going to tell you to take her to A&E. She sound dehydrated and definitely needs to be reviewed by a doctor ASAP.

HolyMoly22 · 01/05/2022 15:47

Being lethargic needs to be seen straight away.

ear infection, UTI or tonsillitis

TurquoiseSwirl · 01/05/2022 15:51

Glad you are getting advice from 111 now. They’ll recommend with what you’ve said either A&are or out of hours gp as a minimum. You can always contact a gp for emergencies like this 24/7.
not drinking and less wet nappies always needs seeing that day it occurs

Starlight86 · 01/05/2022 16:01

They are getting someone to call me back to give me an appointment so hopefully that will be quick

How are things op?

Littlepaws18 · 01/05/2022 20:25

If in doubt always ring 111. They are the professionals let them decide the best course of action. I remember your thread from a few days ago- I really think it's time to act.

Conniebanana · 01/05/2022 22:51

Did you get an appointment?

RandomName130 · 02/05/2022 05:01

@Starlight86 how are things OP?

lovelilies · 02/05/2022 05:22

Go to see out of hours GP (where I live you turn up at A&E and they stream you to doctor or ED depending on condition)

Starlight86 · 02/05/2022 21:06

Sorry she’s been glued to me.

We got an out of hours app yesterday and we were given antibiotics as her ears looked possibly infected and throat is red and swollen and she has large glands.
we started them last night however I’m seeing no improvement with today being much the same of constant calpol and ibruphen.

Shes crying and sleeping a lot and when she’s awake she’s just lying on the couch with me.

If she’s the same tommorow I will be calling our GP.

Hi OP - how worrying for you - Has she had covid recently? My daughter was ill a few weeks after having covid and I had read about Kawaski disease. The Dr said one of the clear signs is a temp of 5 days (plus other symptoms). Here some more info:

Hope she's on the mend soon x

HolyMoly22 · 02/05/2022 21:28

Antibiotics can take a couple of days to kick in.
Hopefully you see an improvement tomorrow.

Thank you for that, I’ll defo bare it in mind, we have never tested her as she’s young but as a family we have had covid twice (although not recently) so it’s entirely possible.

It’s a tricky one, I have 3 Dcs and this is the first time I’ve really experienced one being this unwell , we have navigated our way through croup and tonsillitis and various viral infections but with my DD she is just very lethargic.
Im also concerned about her having so much calpol and ibruphen as we are now on day 7 with no improvement.

She is maybe drinking a cup of juice a day and today she managed 1 small sausage.

I think for peace of mind I will call her GP tommorow.

How is she now. Hope the magic banana medicine is working - or if it's the horrible red one (bleurgh) I hope you can get it down her!

Starlight86 · 03/05/2022 23:00

Just to let you all know we have been admitted to hospital.

i called the gp this morning as she was worse and the gp sent her to hospital.

She has an infection, 2 failed lumber punctures later they are treating it as meningitis until all the bloods come back so she is on IV antibiotics and fluids. They will possibly do another lumber puncture tomorrow.

Whilst she is very unwel it appears to be under control and I’m much calmer.

I should have really gone with my instincts earlier as I knew this was different and I felt she was really poorly.

We are in for at least 48 hours until the bloods come back.
