Is this odd? Toddler happy noise.

Dd is three, when she's happy and running around she makes this noise.. it's hard to explain but it's like a constant grunt/groan/hum. Ugghm ugghm ugghm x100 is the best way to describe it 😂

It's mixed in with squeals and laughter, it's definitely not a physical problem like a breathing issue. Just a happy sound? We've been getting a few funny looks from the neighbours when she plays outside which has prompted me to ask, is this something all toddlers do?

May be nothing, but could be a sign of autism. Speak to your health visitor if you're concerned.

I've looked at the signs of autism and they don't seem to match dd's behaviour in general

My daughter does it, as does her dad and Grandad. We met one other toddler that used to do it until play school commented and they stopped. It’s not normal as in all toddlers but some do. We just know she’s super focused and happy when doing it and she doesn’t know she does it as once watched a video and asked what the noise is.

That's good. The only other thing worth noting is that autism in girls presents differently to boys, so is more often missed. Still not saying it is, but worth looking up signs of autism in girls specifically. If the rest of her development is fine, then it's probably just quirky toddler behaviour.

Tiredmumtired · 30/04/2022 11:10

Yes I've looked at the girls autism specifically and it doesn't seem to fit her. She does have other issues and is under genetic testing but these are physical issues and birth defects not related to her behaviour. So it could be related to something like that, that's why I wondered if it was a "normal" toddler thing. (I hate using the word normal but can't think of a better word instead)

Is it like a vocal gargle? My ds aged 1 has done this since 6/8 mo! Usually high pitched, like he's gargling and cooing at the same time?!

Tiredmumtired · 01/05/2022 06:59

I wouldn't call it's a gargle no, more of a... Humming grunt lol

My son used to do this when he was happy and relaxed. It was like a tic. He didn't even know he was doing it. I didn't mention it, and he stopped after about 6 months. I wouldn't overreact about it.

My son makes this noise too and we always say to each other that we hope he makes it forever. So sweet.

Tiredmumtired · 01/05/2022 09:03

She's been doing it since around 18 months, I'm not over reacting just wondering. It's quite nice as we know when she's very happy because she'll start doing it

Hello, just wondering if you got to the bottom of this? My daughter does the same
