9 month old sleeping on his stomach

Can you sleep on your stomach? An internal organ? Or do you call it sleeping on his tummy / belly / front? Prone?

Anyway that's not even my question. My question is that 9 month old Ds has just rolled onto his stomach in his cot. He's been rolling both ways for a few months now but it's the first time he's fallen asleep on his stomach. I know all the advice says that once they are able to roll and get themselves into this position it's ok to let them sleep on their stomachs. I'm still very nervous though.

On the other hands he's been sleeping Terribly waking up every 2h to 45 min. I guess I'm kind of hoping that he'll sleep better on this stomach. He was awake when I put him in the cot. He rolled around a few times and then fell asleep on his stomach.

Now that he can roll is it as safe to sleep on his stomach as it is on his back or is it just safer than if he couldn't roll? (Hope that makes sense).

Should I turn him onto his back again?

He's perfectly fine. Leave him be.

ScarlettDarling · 29/04/2022 21:48

I assumed that as soon as they can roll then it’s perfectly safe.

EmptyBites · 29/04/2022 21:52

Thanks both. Yes I know it is supposed to be safe once they can get themselves into this position (and back) but I'm still super nervous about it.

I don't remember when DD started sleeping on her stomach but she did sleep better that way.

Leave him be. I’m a stomach sleeper* and it’s so comfy!! Surely whichever way you lie you’re lying on some kind of internal organ?

  • well, not right now as I’m 38 weeks pregnant. I miss it so much!
Terriblecreature · 29/04/2022 21:54

Both of mine slept on their front from 5 months (DS1) and 6 months (DS2). I was paranoid with DS1 and bought the angel are movement sensor but with DS2 I didn't even use it! The little one will be fine. If he can get into that position on his own he will be all good

Terriblecreature · 29/04/2022 21:55

I am also a front sleeper and a great sleeper at that! So so comfy

SunshineAndFizz · 29/04/2022 21:56

Mine starting rolling and sleeping on their front around that age. (The first couple of times I went in and turned them back onto their back as I was paranoid), but at that age they'll be fine x x

Haha yes I was just musing why it's called sleeping on your stomach when technically your stomach is just one if your internal organs so shouldn't you say "sleeping on your belly / tummy".

Talking about it derailing my own thread before I even made my point. 😂

Also congratulations and I hope everything goes well with the pregnancy. Sleeping is terrible at 38 weeks. I was so fed up of sleeping on my side.

I think it's fine. I've watched my kids on the monitor and even if they sleep with their heads smushed into the mattress they move them to the side. They must have the instinct to do that at this age whereas at newborn they won't which is why you should keep them on their back.

EmptyBites · 29/04/2022 22:02

He's in a sleep bag. Is that ok when you are sleeping on your front?

The risk of SIDS after 8 months is absolutely tiny, and most babies by that age are sleeping on their front at least some of the time. As long as he can roll back onto his back if and when he wants to he is absolutely fine.

BertieBotts · 29/04/2022 22:09

I don't see why the sleeping bag would make any difference.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 29/04/2022 22:11

My DD slept on her stomach as soon as she could. She slept so much better when she could. She used to sleep on her tummy with her bottom in the air. Obviously I worried but it was the only way

EmptyBites · 29/04/2022 22:20

Ah ok thanks everyone for the reassurance. I got too worried and turned him around. Of course he promptly woke up and now doesn't want to go back into his cot anymore. Serves me right 🙄

Next time I'll let him be. Thanks so much for the replies!!😊

Ah I think I wrote this with my first. I ignored the advice and turned her, woke her up and she continued to be a terrible sleeper.

Dd2 is fifteen months and has done this since maybe seven months, I have let her be, in a sleeping bag, often bum in air. She is the happiest little sleeper.

ShadowPuppets · 29/04/2022 22:25

@EmptyBites oh god talk about me missing the point! Sorry, brain isn’t really working at this point (and thank you - I’m suddenly remembering that sleep gets so bad towards the end, probably so you’d willingly start the newborn sleep deprivation instead!)

Hallyup89 · 29/04/2022 22:25

He'll be fine. Don't bother trying to turn him next time, because he'll turn right back and, as you've discovered, you get a grouchy baby too.

prediction500 · 29/04/2022 22:27

DC 7 months does this. As soon as she's down she rolls on her stomach. The general consensus is that it's fine at this age.

Cherryblossoms85 · 29/04/2022 22:31

By the time I had my third I stuck him on his tummy at three months because of the horrific problems with reflux . Not recommended, but then again not sure getting offer by your parents for never sleeping is terribly healthy either 🤔

MGee123 · 30/04/2022 06:40

You'll get used to it. It panicked me for the first few weeks but then she started sleeping so much better I stopped worrying about it!!!

CurtainWig · 30/04/2022 20:00

Thanks everyone. After I woke him while turning him around he didn't go back to sleep for ages (and he wasn't happy😶) so next time I'll definitely not attempt that. Thanks for the reassurance everyone!!

Chels98 · 16/02/2023 23:51

5 week old lying on tummy for naps & nighttime sleeping?????
only way he seams to sleep and settle

MGee123 · 17/02/2023 06:53

Not recommended - I'd avoid personally, not worth the risk. At 5 weeks it's not unusual they won't sleep anywhere but on you/in car/in buggy.

Chels98 · 29/02/2024 17:48

Just want to say my little boy is now 13 months old and after 11/12 months of co sleeping & sleepless nights he is now sleeping in his cot on his own & in his own bedroom!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳
