Her temp is 'breaking through' Nurofen. The GP told me to follow instructions on the packet as to how often to give it, whereas I expected him to tell me to give a more frequent dose. I'm sure that was the case when my ds had a similar illness (though that was 6 yrs ago, so I could be mis-remembering). Any thoughts?

Don't forget you can combine calpol (paracetamol) and nurofen as they work differently, but both shld reduce temp

inSanityClaus · 10/01/2008 13:37

How does that work? Give the calpol halfway through the Nurofen cycle?

you can alternate calpol and children's nurufen three hourly. eg:
7am calpol
10am nurofen
1pm calpol
4pm nurofen
7pm calpol

and then a dose in the night if necessary

If this doesn't bring his temperature down, then contact a doctor again.

Watch out for dehrydration - make sure he is doing pelnty of wet nappies, if not, he needs more fluids, and if you can't get him to take more fluids, then he needs a doctor.

Oh that is good to know, many thanks both of you. She is guzzling water but doesn't want even my norks . A dvd of In the Night Garden has also perked her right up, hooray.

I'll give as few meds as I can but i do want to keep her temp down. She is only 9m - I had forgotten how scary babies' illnesses can be (she is a 'menopuase' baby - I'm out of practice ...)

sorry, she not he!

Babies can be scarey, and sometimes they can get very ill very quickly. Keep a close eye on her and following your instincts.

Err ... does Medised count as Calpol? I think they're both paracetamol-based, no? I've run out of Calpol and don't want to take dd out into the cold to buy some. I know medised has a decongestant in it, don't know how that impacts.

OP posts:

yes medised counts as calpol as it is paracetamol. I would (and have )combine it with nurofen as don't think the decongestant will be a problem.
