Standing or sitting?

Hi. I am just training my 3 year old (+ 1 month) DS at the mo. He refuses to use potty so he is using the toilet and things are going ok except for the odd accident or so. However i have trained him sitting down..we are a week into it and am wondering when i get him to wee standing up? Any ideas?

I am also starting potty training my ds (3 v soon) and as far as I know, boys don't start standing to pee til they are a couple of years older than 3 - maybe 5/6 or so or perhaps even older- too much spray likely before then!
But I would love to know from MNers who have done this already so I am really just bumping the message!

well, no-one told me that boys were supposed to be taught to wee sitting down initially, so DS (just three) has been trained to wee standing up. He's fine. He's only just been toilet trained, as he refused to sit on the potty at all (same as you TOD) - so he's been taught to "wee like daddy" and to ask when he needs to do a poo (we have a small seat that fits on the toilet, aptly referred to by him as the "poohing seat", but he much prefers me to hold him over the loo while he sits on it - bother!

there isn't much, if any, spray tbh - DH has obviously done a good job of explaining the dynamics....

Thanks. We had a bad day today now....good few accidents i think the novelty is wearing off for him cos he was doing so well!
Was wondering if i try him standing up will it be an incentive for him...but i suppose that novelty will wear off too!!!!
As for spray...he manages to spray everywhere when sitting down even after my DH coached him to point it down!!!
My sister has 3 girls and none of these problems!!!

we never did sitting because he wanted to be like daddy so we got a stool for the toilet and he has always done standing up.

theladyevenstar · 11/01/2008 14:04

lol Legal nobody told me that either, and when i trained ds1 he was 14 months old at the time and i taught him to wee standing up.... ds2 is not a problem he is only 15 weeks old lol.

TOD, there are these floating ball things you can buy in boots i think, they are to help teach boys to wee in the toilet rather than spraying lol apparently they are aim improving things......might be good for older ones as well if they spray....will try to find link to show you. HTH x

TOD · 11/01/2008 14:10

Thanks a mill will try to find those floating things!! Good day today with stars and reward system going....hard to keep the momentum going!!!!

My ds always sat down, and I had to get him to "point your willy down!" "I'm pointing my willy down, mummy!"

Had to as the wee would always spray everywhere and find a way between the toilet and seat

Now, a year later, he crouches over the potty to pee, even though I've told him that he has to use the toilet if he won't sit down! He doesn't do it though, I guess he'll preogree onto that when he's ready though

At least he's got good control when he's crouching lol

found them yessssssssssss lol was not letting this get the better of me!!!!

theladyevenstar · 11/01/2008 14:40

and here is what people say about them too....

Saw this on The Dragon's Den and wondered if it would solve the problem of accidental spillages when small and not so small boys are not quite focussed enough on their aim. It did - Not a single accident to mop up since I've introduced the target ball.

I think these are a great idea, and sure enough they really helped to improve my little boys aim, as before the floor around the toilet was often wet (yuk!). But we have found that they flush away very very easily, maybe our toilet is too powerful?! It just worries me a bit they are all sitting somewhere in the pipes smiling away!

These are fantastic - they work quickly, the kids love using them, they cut down the cost of nappies (and stop nappies going to landfill), they are hygenic and last a few weeks. I never thought that something like this would work so well for our little girl, but they have been a marvel (it's fun for dad's too...but don't tell anyone I said that). I gave our friends one from our packet, and within a couple of days their boy was asking to use the toilet, and was clean.

ChasingSquirrels · 11/01/2008 14:40

ds pretty much pee'd standing up from the moment he could reach - he used to hoik his balls up onto the rim so he could do it! He was about 2y6m when he started I guess.
those blue balls are basically pretty ping pong balls - which are alot cheaper and would work just as well.

TOD · 14/01/2008 11:51

Thanks a mill!!! Am def going to order some of those balls!!! He is now standing up to pee ( of his own accord ) cos he wants to be like daddy so there is even more of a mess now but its all progress
