2.5yo absolutely hates hairdryer

My DD absolutely hates the hairdryer and it's making bedtime a bit unbearable. We wash her hair around once a week and she gets herself into such a state because of it. I've tried giving her an earlier bath so that her hair could air dry and she doesn't go to bed with wet hair but it still had the same consequences of out of control crying. I've tried explaining that it's just a loud noise and won't hurt her. Tried it on the cool setting. Just not sure what to do as towel drying takes so long. Anysuggestions?

DS is the same. Hates the hairdryer, Hoover, hairdresser, doctor, foot measuring lady. Also add nappy change, getting dressed etc.

Your DD is crying because she doesn't like the sound and is possibly scared of it, not because of any scalp issues. Just let it dry naturally (especially since her hair is not even that long), she won't get a cold from wet hair, colds are caused by viruses.

My dd was the same and this is totally normal to be afraid of hand and hair dryers. I therefore never ever dried her hair with the hairdryer.

Your dd is giving you a boundary that’s easy to adhere to. Pick your battles and make bath time fun time. It is fine to go to bed with wet hair. If you really hate doing this, why not wash her hair a weekend day?

I guess that my mum always dried our hair after washing it so I've always had it in my head that going to bed with wet hair would cause a cold...

She only has shoulder length hair and it's not very thick. She also hates the hairdressers and last time I took her she had a total meltdown so would rather avoid haircuts too. I have wondered if maybe she has a sensitive scalp but is OK with getting her hair brushed and put into bobbles etc. She did have cradle cap when she was a baby but surely that can't have such a long impact?

She cries when she gets her hair washed because I think she associates it with the hairdryer. She also hates the noise of hand dryers and until recently was terrified of the hoover. Is it normal? My friends DD who is the same age isn't phased by the hairdryer at all.

Yes this is all normal. My daughter is nearly 4 and is still frightened of hand dryers. I know loads of other 2-4 yr olds who are scared of hand dryers/hair dryers and cry when they get their washed or cut. Thing is, getting it cut only has to be done rarely so even if she hates it, overall you're saving her from lots more upset than keeping it the length you are and blow drying it. Also, you should try to find a specialist children's hairdresserr a mobile hairdresser. My little girl likes getting her hair cut but we go to a children's hairdresser, she used to sit on my knee, now she sits in the seat which is a car, she plays on the tablet, she doesn't have her hair too wet, she can eat or whatever she wants whilst she's getting it done etc.

I didn’t know that people used hair dryers on kids hair, I’ve never used one on my 11 year old or 4 year old

I wouldn't routinely use a hairdryer on my dd. She occasionally asks me to! I just use a detangler spray, brush and she goes to bed with damp hair.

Me neither. I guess we all just go with what we grow up with ourselves, we each have our own normal. I would only ever use a hairdryer to 'style' hair, so adults only. We all shower in the evening in my house, dds teenagers now, and just go to bed with it wet.

Happierthanever91 · 27/04/2022 17:51

My DD hated it when she was that age too, I think the noise freaked her out as she didn't like vacuums either. I stopped blow drying it and just started towel drying it for bed and its been fine 😊 my Mum always blowdried mine too so I thought it was the normal thing to do but it's not been an issue not doing it

Regularsizedrudy · 27/04/2022 18:11

Yes she has a sensitive scalp…because she’s 2 and a half! Their skin isnt like adult skin, of course she hates the loud hot painful hairdryer. Stop using it!

"PS. Colds are caused by viruses, not the cold. Wet hair won’t do you or your DD and harm."

You might be right that it's fine to sleep with wet hair, but being cold and wet really DOES make you more vulnerable to viruses. (Possibly a dormant virus being activated).

It never occurred to me to use the hairdryer on line when they were small. They're 10 now and still not keen
