Is it too late to switch to reusables for 8 month old?

Hi, I am sad to admit I am using disposables with DS who is 8 months old. But I am seriously considering moving to reusables but don't know if it is too late now. Also which ones do people recommend? What do I need to know?
My local authority is North somerset and they don't have a nappy scheme.

Buy 2nd hand to see what you like, 2 part systems using motherease air flow wraps for the wrap part are the most reliable. Some shaped nappies worth trying are little lambs, tots bots, motherease, easy peasy bumbles. There is a great cloth nappy site called cloth nappy addicts loads of great advice and info on there.

Piffle · 09/01/2008 21:44

not too late... I have finally started using them with ds2 after taking months to come to terms with the washing piles... He is absolutely happy. I use them 80% of the time

Coby · 09/01/2008 21:47

It's rarely too late. Shame there is no local project for you yet.

The Nappy Lady has a tailored nappy advice service where they will help you choose the best nappies for you. Alternatively there are nappy adivisors with shops on here - check on the MN small business classifieds section. I'm an independant nappy advisor and work for my local projects so throw your questions in whichever direction you like.

Do you have a tumble drier and are you on a tight budget are the first questions you will be asked.

Cargirl has given you good recommendations.

oh use motherease one size and some tots bots some geobel some bamboozles all are great. Ds2 not a big wetter. Love the shape of tots but rate the bamboo ones more than cottons

mejon · 09/01/2008 21:53

No, not too late. DD was 7 months old by the time I put her in washables. I'd bought Motherease One Sized nappies waaaay before she was born but they looked so huge on her (though you can fold them down to fit) I just kept on putting it off. She had no problem adjusting or switching between washables and disposables which I still use at night and for when we are out and about.

Try and get hold of some secondhand ones or try a few different ones first before making a big committment just in case.

Coby · 09/01/2008 21:59

yep, second hand ones are good advice (as long as you don't get ones that are really worn out as then you won't get a good idea of what they are like). I illustrate my reasoning with the fact that I found Motherease Onesize nappies awful, yet Mejon and Piffle seem to like them. There is no one reusable that suits everyone although there are a fair few which suit many thankfully.

Nappyzone · 09/01/2008 22:02

There are a few different types to consider mainly shaped which require a wrap over or pocket nappies which go on on one piece with a soaker in the pocket that you seperate to wash. Both have pros and cons and somee suit others better. Its best to read a few threads and hang out a while till you get the lingo or better still contact a nappy advisor who will give you tailor made advice. There are a few in the small clasified threads (my ad has expired). ANyway regards many will give lovely free unbiased advice. I personally loveeeeeeeeeee pocket nappies and the nearest thing i have to a sposie is a bumgenius but i am totally biased as i love em ! at eight months you would still get plenty of values outof a changeover now! Good luck with your quest!

Sorry just read another thread which mentioned Lollipop. I'd completely forgotten about them. They are a group of nappy agents, they demonstrate and sell both their own nappies and other makes too. There is no obligation to buy. They should have an advisor local to you. In fact, I find their own brand of bamboo nappies rather nice.

lollipop nappies

Fizzylemonade · 10/01/2008 16:30

Cough cough, I put my son into reusables when he was 14 months old. I am a complete convert. Definitely get a nappy advisor in to demonstrate all the different nappies out there, it is a minefield.

fordfiesta · 10/01/2008 16:39

we used tots bots and motherease for ds, buy 2nd hand if you are not planning anymore little ones.

FlameNFurter · 10/01/2008 21:30

@ NZ's expired ad (mine hasn't )!

Tailored advice (preferably with a demonstration) is best - at this age you have more of an idea of what your baby is like and what suits you. Once you have worked out what you like the sound of, then buying second hand is a good idea, or lots of sites offer a trial thing if you ask .

Cloth Nappy Addicts is having huuuuuuuuge issues right now - not been able to get on for days!

Dragonhart · 10/01/2008 21:44

I swapped at 13months but I knew I was going to have more children in washables so it didnt seem a waste to me.

I use wambamboos (although I am not sure you can get them anymore?!), bambinex teddies (which are my current fav and I am looking to buy some second had ones if anyone has any...[hopeful emocicon]) and terries. With motherease airflow wraps. The nappy Lady helped me but I didnt really go with what my adviser advised. Just good for info. Also these threads are really helpful when you have a question. Good Luck!

Nappyzone · 10/01/2008 21:48

i am writing it now! i always forget to save a copy

FlameNFurter · 10/01/2008 21:52

Bambinex are a slightly fluffier version of wambambooes

Dragonhart · 10/01/2008 21:57

Keeping my lips slealed Flame . I might have found a use for my bambineos though. Any sugestions would be gratefully received

gigglewitch · 10/01/2008 21:57

I found kooshies ...in Tesco when DS1 was about six months old. as we went on to give him a little bro and sis then they have been well used and saved us a fortune. I think that the child does better with potty training (added bonus) as they are more aware of when they are 'wet' than when they wear disposables
not scientific, just my opinion!

Staceym21AtLast · 10/01/2008 22:05

not too late at all!

flame is brill for advice

she sorted me out.

I now have stacks of nappies!

i mainly use Motherease onesize (and a similar nappy by onelife) and motherease airflow wraps.

did have prefolds at one point which were great for tiddler baby but once he wouldnt stay still for more than 10secs i needed something quicker so shaped was better!

i use a lot of boosters too as ds is a heavy wetter but again it depends on the baby.

i have found disposible liners better than fleece, but ds always seems to have (sorry TMI alert) loose stools so fleece was always a bit messy for me!

i have to admit when out and about i have a disposible in my handbag so i dont have to take the changing bag out but use reusables about 95% of the time!

good luck!

FlameNFurter · 10/01/2008 22:12

remembers promise to weigh sling last weekend...

Staceym21AtLast · 10/01/2008 22:17

SOrry for hijack!

BabyBuftersNappies · 11/01/2008 18:39

Never to late.
I agree buying 2nd hand so you can try many different ones

Jen1978 · 13/01/2008 20:10

thanks for the advice! i filled in a quesionnaire on the nappy lady site and recieved my advice yesterday - suggested Bamboozles and motherease airflow wraps with fleece liners or try paper liners. so think I might get a trial system of these and see how I go! Really looking forward to it actually, just need to convince DH that it is a good idea!

If you want a pretty nappy too, I highly recommend the lovely baby bufters (She can't plug herself, but I can and they are fab!)
