Is it too late for a cotton bum @ 16 weeks??

DD3 is 16 weeks and is currently in disposables, my other 2 dd's were both in terry squares dd1 till knickers and dd3 till 1 year. Now dd2 is in process of toilet training im thinking about giving it a go with dd3 as i will only have one lot of nappies to deal with.
I previously used terry squares nappy nippas and rubbers, but im very tempted by some of the lovely girly nappies i keep seeing but i have no idea about the stuffables, wraps etc its so confusing
Sorry for the essay but any information will be gladly received!

If you want something reliable stick with a 2 part system, shaped nappies instead of terries and motherease air flow wraps IME

tassisssss · 09/01/2008 21:23

if you're used to using terries, why not go for a few lovley girly wraps. nature babies are v cute though motherease (not so cute) are probably better.

I like fluffles and regular cotton totsbots.

16 weeks is definately not too late! We only switched when our firstborn was 17ish months and haven't looked back (now expecting noumber 3).

I reccommend baby beehinds. They're really absorbant, easy to use and look good.

What are the shaped nappies are they the ones that look like fabric disposables??

essay??? - you should see some of my posts

I started my DD2 in cloth at 16 weeks, haven't looked back since - still saved a lot of money over disposables.

Totally agree with Cargirl, the most reliable nappies are the two part system coupled with a motherease airflow wrap. Don't be tempted by the pretty colours of pockets unless you have money to spare as you may get through a few before finding the best fit for your DD - many people say bumgenius are reliable though if you want to try pockets. Best two parters IME are bumbles - great flexible fit - esp with nippas, plus they are fleece lined, good quality and cheap to buy....what more could you want??

Why not see if there is a local nappy project near you where you can try a few different nappies out a minimal cost if you want to try different types.

oliviaelanasmum · 09/01/2008 21:29

Do i just do a google search for a nappy project?

nature babies do some fab pink tye die wraps that I found reliable

Coby · 09/01/2008 21:31

bumbles - really worth a try, they are birth to potty sized btw so only need to buy one set. Have heard that baby beehinds are not an ideal birth to potty nappy as they are a bit on the small side (still waiting to try mine out though).

Coby · 09/01/2008 21:33

real nappy project in your area here

oliviaelanasmum · 09/01/2008 21:34

Ohh i like the look of the bumbles, thats the sort of thing im used to, i can fold terries in my sleep but i fancy a change. How many nappies and wraps would i realistically need?

Oh thanks for that, i think as soon as dp gets paid im going to start scouting for some, do you think its worth trying 2nd hand ones first rather than lay out upfront??

Do you have a tumble drier? I would think you would need about 15 at that age (you'll need fewer as time goes on) and then you could wash every third day I should think.

Are you planning on using cloth at night time too?

Coby · 09/01/2008 21:40

I bought 20 fluffles brand new when I started out, found them too bulky and sold them on (thankfully for more than I paid for them as there was a national shortage of them at the time ). I find second hand as a fab way of trying out different types with minimum outlay, you mihgt find some are a bit too well used to get a decent idea of how they are though so buy carefully. My first bumbles were awful, really badly treated and not a good representation of them at all - still loved them though!

oliviaelanasmum · 09/01/2008 21:41

Yes i have a tumble dryer and 2 wash lines for summer, i suppose i would use them at night too.

do not tumble dry bumbles it wears them out very quickly - they get bald patches, in fact it's not good for any nappies. Bumbles are fab and inexpensive they were the only thing that coped with dd2 super weeing when she got to 18 months old.

Coby · 09/01/2008 21:56

Cargirl - how old are your bumbles? - my new ones seem to tumble without any problem but the old ones didn't fare as well, they improved the quality about 8 months ago (I think).

Tumble drier is a nice back up so you need not rely on anything just because it is quick drying. If you have hard water and can only line dry you may find some brands of nappies turn a bit hard after a while. With a tumble drier you can just bung them in for 20 mins and they soften up nicely so no need to worry about that problem.

Ellas house Bumhuggers are fab for night, they take a while to dry so you may need three pairs to keep you going but they are wonderfully absorbant and fully fleece lined for comfort all night - my DDs bum is lovely and soft even 14 hours into wearing one (unlike when she has been in a disposable).

Looks like the nappy world is your oyster tbh!

oliviaelanasmum · 09/01/2008 21:57

Thanks for all the help, im now going to have to convince dp that its not just another outlet for spending!

Coby · 09/01/2008 22:01

tell him you get £30 out of your first £45 returned to you by your local council - that should help...then don't get addicted to cloth nappies like many...may sound silly now but maybe one day you'll understand

CarGirl · 09/01/2008 22:01

mine were the original bumbles and dd is 5.5 now! But I would say tumble any nappy as little as possible as it does age them quicker.

hotbot · 09/01/2008 22:58

i used a company called lollipop for mine, came to the house and loaned me a couple to try before i bought.i bought bum genius, but i think it depends on the shape of your lo as to which style fits best. My dd is tall for her age but slim, she has never really been chunky thighed. Bum genius are like disposable shaped.
btw , its not too late and you do save a fortune
