Anyone else mildly concerned about this hepatitis “outbreak” in the under-5s?

ive just been reading about this and they don’t seem to know why these kids are falling ill with hepatitis. I say outbreak - the numbers are still low but are a lot higher than they usually see (they do see kids with hepatitis, peaking at this time of year, but not usually in such numbers).

they seem to think it could be linked to adenovirus. Maybe lack of exposure to such viruses because of lockdown. But this is not what they are seeing in Denmark. Very strange.

I mean I’m not losing sleep over it yet, but it’s a bit of a thought, isn’t it. One little girl had to have a liver transplant.

Yes I posted a thread about it about a week ago and I have been getting increasingly concerned since then. They seem to now be leaning towards an Adenovirus being the trigger for it but it is so worrying, I don't think all the children were under 5 either it seems the ages affected go up to sixteen. I pray they find the cause and better treatments soon.

Isn't it one of the standard baby jabs? Maybe it's because parents are opting out of the jabs...that's what caused a measles outbreak in my area a while back

Moomeh · 23/04/2022 21:55

Actually scratch my previous comment! The recent flare isn't HepB which is the baby jab one

Some people think it may be related to covid - as in having covid lowers your immunity for a bit making you more vulnerable to other infections.
Obviously kids haven’t been first in line for vaccines, they’ve been highly exposed via nursery/schools and a lot of them may have had covid with no symptoms so not picked up.

so yes I’m worried but if it is covid related, I’m going to be so angry because plenty of scientists have said we should have done more to make schools safer (ventilation being the big thing) and they haven’t.

hopefully it’s not covid related.

I've just been having a read, and it is concerning. I hope they find a cause and treatment soon.

This is the WHO summary: www.who.int/emergencies/disease-outbreak-news/item/acute-hepatitis-of-unknown-aetiology---the-united-kingdom-of-great-britain-and-northern-ireland

Toddlerteaplease · 23/04/2022 22:47

I bought it was supposedly covid related. There has also been a huge increase in children being diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and diabetes, after having covid.

Good thread on Twitter. I got impression that a likely explanation is adenovirus that is circulating widely (sudden surge) after being suppressed hugely for years. More plausible than many theories.

Daqqe · 24/04/2022 08:06

It is NOT covid related. Well, not directly. Nearly ever case has been linked to adenovirus. The germs on steroids at the moment because of bloody lockdown/restrictions. I’ve never seen my kids & their friends get so many illnesses one after another. School & nursery have said it’s just been brutal this winter & isn’t showing signs of letting up yet.

My daughters consultant says it’s a mixture of two things really - childrens immune systems not getting a ‘work out’ for a significant period of time, we all became very sterile & our immune systems had a nice little nap. Fine for adults, shit for children who need to keep working on theirs. Plus, the two years of on & off restrictions also meant a level of heard immunity with many viruses constantly circulating pre-2020 was wiped clean. Now they are ‘rife’ to use a covid hysteria term ..

I don’t think it’s anything to majorly panic about, the vast, vast majority of kids recover with no complications. As with any illness, some children may experience complications. My kids breezed through chicken pox. My best friends daughter was in intensive care with it ☹️🤷🏼‍♀️

my mum knows one of the children affected. He is 3. Fine one day, had a great day out, totally happy and normal. Woke up next day and was jaundice so took him to a&e, admitted straight away and they told the parents to prepare for the worst.

this was about 3 weeks ago, he is still very poorly and in hospital.

what it didn’t say on the news is in the area he lives a lot of kids came down with this illness within days of each other. Environmental health even thought it could have been linked to his nursery but that was found to be ok.

I couldn’t believe it wasn’t on the news sooner!!!

RubyEmma212121 · 24/04/2022 13:23

@Workinghardeveryday may I ask how the little boy is doing now?

My 2 year old starts pre school this week and I have a 4 month old baby.. I've literally only recently just about come down from the ledge of severe covid anxiety and now this..

Trying not to panic but the majority of cases are in UK and we saw how covid spread like wildfire..

Workinghardeveryday · 24/04/2022 13:58

@RubyEmma212121

as far as I know he is still in hospital.

try not to worry, easier said than done I know!!

all I know is he is testing negative for everything they think could be causing it. Without a diagnosis they cannot treat it.

Was this in Scotland by any chance? I find it strange that it has popped up worldwide but also seems to have clusters, like the outbreak in Scotland. It's been reported two children diagnosed had had contact with one another too. Really strange and I just cannot stop worrying about it. I'm pretty traumatised from Covid already, what a bloody scary and horrible time to be alive it is Sad. How suddenly it seems to make children so unwell is bloody terrifying.

Workinghardeveryday · 25/04/2022 08:07

@MumbleCrumbs
no not Scotland.

When it first happened there were 6 kids from the same nursery within days of each other
