What can I offer my toddler other than what we are already offering?

he currently eats cereal, oats and toast for breakfast.

Fish, ham, chicken, any meat he will eat. He needs protein.

Aquamarine1029 · 22/04/2022 16:54

And fruit.

Patty101 · 22/04/2022 17:02

Beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, sausages.

Fruit with coconut yogurt.

Tinned mackerel.

Mushrooms, beans, sausage, bacon, (homemade) hash browns, crumpets, bagels (check allergens on these 2).
Fruit (fresh, stewed, frozen, pureed) with suitable yogurt.
Fruit with porridge made with milk s@Hope54321 ubstitute.

Meat, cheese, bread and fruit?

SoggyPaper · 22/04/2022 17:18

Obviously vegan cheese, if he’ll eat it.

SoggyPaper · 22/04/2022 17:22

You could have rice porridge.

It’s a pretty western concept to have different breakfast foods - you can give him what he eats the rest of the day if that’s easier.

But if you want something breakfasty, there tend to be lots of online recipes for smoothies, smoothie bowls or overnight oats which can be made dairy free. Coconut yogurt is expensive but really nice, or soy yoghut is a lot cheaper.

Lightstoobright · 22/04/2022 17:31

Chia seeds mixed with dairy free milk left in fridge overnight, add fruit.

He’ll eat these foods at lunch and dinner. I haven’t offered meat or fish for breakfast.

And fruit.

His eczema seems to flare with fruits, except for blueberries and grapes.

He usually has coconut yogurt after lunch or dinner.

What about a variation on pancakes?

carefullycourageous · 22/04/2022 17:40

I agree that protein would be good, and you could do e.g. sausage sandwich, ham pancake (make a vegan pancake mixture), vegan muffins (savoury or sweet).

I also love dahl and rice for breakfast, often used to give that to the kids.

Any flat breads are nice, like chappatis.

Potato scones (do they have egg? Expect they can be adapted). Rostis. Fry potatoes.

Beans on toast. Bean toastie (do they eat vegan cheese?).

Also I agree that 'breakfast foods' are a made-up concept, so give him anything you like. Cold pizza is my favourite breakfast (again vegan cheese).

I feel your pain, my son had all those allergies (plus wheat and soy). He has outgrown some now (but not fruit- he has oral allergy syndrome/food pollen syndrome)

  • stewed/baked fruit might work. My son is also fine with fruit juice
  • baked beans on toast?
  • potatoes of some sort perhaps? (Fried potatoes or similar)?

But in reality breakfasts are a fairly basic meal in our house. And don't beat yourself up that his diet is inevitably more limited/less varied. Use vitamin supplements and calcium supplements too if needed. My son had a pretty limited diet but is the picture of health and very sporty and bright.

LollyLol · 22/04/2022 17:48

toast and marmalade
toast and marmite
hot cross bun (fairly easy to make on a weekend if you can’t find a vegan one to buy, they toast up brilliantly)

batches to freeze:
home-made apple cinnamon vegan muffins
home-made low-sugar vegan flapjack with glacé cherries or raisins

my DS will sometimes eat tinned peaches or an apple for breakfast with some cereal.

Twizbe · 22/04/2022 17:53

Nothing wrong with keeping as is.

Mine have basically always had weetabix with soya milk, toast with dairy free butter and marmite.
