Finding ad hoc childcare?

My husband started travelling for work after a long time home working due to covid. He did a week in the states a few weeks ago and I was left parenting solo for a whole week, and when he came back he was quite jetlagged so I still did a lot on my own. Timing was pretty bad as it was Easter and our regular activities were not happening so it was a struggle to keep baby entertained for a week with no help. We don't have family or many acquaintances in the area so it really is just the two of us.

It made me realise that we need to find a trusted carer (or several of them in case they can't fit us in) for our ten month old baby. However I'm struggling as it wouldn't be someone we'd need all the time / on the same days every week for example. I'd like them to come some days of the week regularly but I'd need more of a hand / presence when my husband is abroad or when we are sick and need a helping hand for example. How would I find this sort of childcare in the first place?

Secondly it makes me worried to leave such a young baby with someone I never met! I'm sure this has been the struggle of most mums when hiring childcare but how did you appease your anxiety over this? (For context I even selected a nursery rather than a child minder for him for when I return to work as I wanted him to be somewhere where there would be many adults not just the one). Any tips on overcoming the anxiety of leaving him with a babysitter when he's so young and wouldn't be able to tell me if something is wrong?

I've even thought about installing cameras at home! Lol 😂

Any tips / ideas? Sorry if it seems basic — I’m quite worried at the prospect of leaving baby with someone I’ve never met by himself.

Thanks!

I used the bible app and found someone’s au pair who was available for babysitting, then asked if I could speak to their host family for a reference. I don’t have cameras but the child I needed looking after was verbal, I might have got them in your situation.

It sounds like the sort of thing a self employed nanny would be interested in. Is there a local nannies page on Facebook for your area? It would be a good place to advertise.

I've been using the bubble app for my 10 month old. It feels a bit like tinder swiping through sitters!
Each sit so far has been only 2-3 hours and I've been home the whole time getting on with some chores.
I'm just figuring out which sitters baby and I like best and then hopefully will have confidence to do some longer sits and actually go out without baby!

Thanks ladies I never heard about this app. I'll explore! Sorry about the delayed reply - the app on my phone stopped working and you know how hard it is to use the computer with a baby!

My 3 dcs are older (primary school age) but we’ve always struggled with ad hoc stuff, we live in Ireland and there aren’t really websites with babysitters etc , Ireland is v much a country where family help family. However we have loads of family and nobody helps, through newborns toddlers , illness etc . We’ve had babysitters but often pre uni and they just aren’t that reliable and move in quick toy . Loads of friends but they all have support so don’t need or want to do any babysitting swaps. We swap over constantly , I work in education but part time and fit it around kids as much as possible and we do things separately if we need a break , need to do some diy etc . Wrap around is also a nightmare where we live , waiting lists etc .
If you are uk based there prob are more options and an au pair can work really well for many plp too.
