Does anyone actually find hemp better than cotton?

I've always found hemp nappies (and boosters)too thin and sold them on in the past in favour of chunky cotton. Would be interested to hear testimonials from anyone who happily uses hemp most of the time please.

I have never gotten on with hemp very well... assumed it was just me!

sorry i do - i always use nice thin hemp inserts in my pockets alone or at mega peeing stages (of late) under the std inserts as boosters, i also have and love ellas house hemp nappies and find they last me overnight with minimum boosting without them being huge nappies. I live in the north and i think we live in a soft water area so crunchy cardboard is never an issue unless i leave them on a radiator for days on end in which case a 2 min tumble generally sorts them out. Hope that helps.

I absolutely love my ella's house bumhuggers for night time use - I find they are way better at night time containment of extreme peeing than using even a very well boosted cotton nappy. But as I have a full set of cotton MEOS which I use for daytime and get on with realy well, I've never really thought about using hemp daytime nappies, although I sometimes wish I had a few of the ella's house ones to try as their night nappies are just so good.... can't really justify the expense of buying more nappies though.

love my ella house hemp night nappies and find them softer and better at absorbing than cotton but I usually only use them at night, cotton or bamboo in the day, cos they give such a huge arse it's impossible to get trousers over them

I have a hemp insert for a Minki nappy (got secondhand & prob been well used/washed for absorption) but I found it didn't seem to hold much. I always prefer bamboo for any long periods (night time) - lovely! But I think even just for daytime, I'd prefer a folded large cotton prefold rather than the hemp insert.

DD2 is a full time hemp bottom. We use Ellas House Day Nappies and (Bumhugger at night). I use them because they are the thinnest fitting nappy on the market IME and I have tried most . I needed a thin nappy as DD2 was using DD1s hand me down clothes but DD1 was disposable-reared and had relatively slim fitting clothes. My EH are third hand but still work very well coupled with an airflow wrap - I boost them with one microfibre dishcloth so they are nice and soft where it counts and that lasts my average wetting DD 6 hours without any problems. We have soft water so no real problems with hardness unless I dry them over a radiator.

I've got a couple of bamboo nappies which I also like but find many of them too bulky for most clothes. Despite DD being 20 months she still fits in size 1 little lamb and lollipop nappies and they are a generally thinner fit for her (although need to be changed more often).

Essay over...anyone still reading this

of course the downside is all the pre-washing that is required (which is one reason why I bought second hand )

CarGirl · 09/01/2008 21:25

Yes I used the HemPresto nappy system absolutely bomb proof in terms of absorbancy and exploding poo and goes on like an all in one nappy, absolutely brilliant. My bamboo nappies are a slimmer fit (only because dd has such a petite bottom though) but they are nowhere near as reliable and take ages to dry.....

Nellytheelephant, I've never found MEOS absorbent enough even for day use (have had to boost them other brand boosters)! Then my DS has always been a super heavy wetter - he weed straight through a Bumhugger. I also find hemp nappies get very heavy and start to fall down.
My large hemp boosters have to be doubled up at least to match my cotton Poppolino ones.
Glad you're all getting on but I'm still not convinced - if there's any chance Baby#3 is as heavy a wetter as DS, it's just not worth the investment. Am thinking the same would go for other wonderfibres - Fluffles, Bamboo etc.

the nappy that worked best for my super heavy wetter was the original bumbles double boosted again it was before the days of widespread use of bamboo & hemp. I think the HemPresto system is exceptionally goo though but it is a cotton nappy with a hemp booster rather than being all hemp IYSWIM, I wonder if the cotton soaks up quicker and stops it leaking at the legs ie reduces the chance of run off?

BabyBuftersNappies · 11/01/2008 18:37

I think its all in the mind that something so thin cant do the same job
I love cotton but do use hemp as pocket inserts...I prefer hemp over bamboo

Coby · 11/01/2008 21:51

I think people have problems with hemp becuase it takes such a long time to get to it's optimum absorbancy and they give up on it before it gets there. I bought some brand new 'bigger weeds' inserts and they were still 'running off' (IYSWIM ) after 12 washes . Using microfibre cloths in my ellas house works a treat - mops up straight away then slowly passes it onto the hemp for 'storage' .

Has anyone tried a bamboo baby beehinds? What was it like? I have one and it looks and feels exactly like my hemp nappies - not sure if it is mislabelled or not - never seen a bamboo nappy like it before . I know they do a hemp version.

bcsnowpea · 11/01/2008 21:56

I have never used hemp nappies, but we do have Bambinos -bamboo nappies. I find them much softer and more absorbent than the cotton.
