Reassure me- holiday and high temp

Hi all,

Just need some reassurance and when it comes to health I am, hands up, a worrier.

DC is hardly ever ill. Just recently had covid before we came away. Tonight she says her ear hurts and has a high temp although I didn't bring a thermometer so can't check. Forehead feels hot when kissed. Body feels hot. I think it could be an ear infection?? It's not hot here but she has been swimming. Sore throat too.

I've given calpol and nurofen at the same time. Can't give anymore till 1am. Just having a worry as I watch her sleep now. Urgh hate it when they're poorly and worse not being at home.

Any advise?

Whereabouts are you on holiday? UK or abroad?

It does sound like an ear infection - if so they are really sore and will need looked at by a GP and possible antibiotics.

MrsDThaskala · 19/04/2022 21:14

No abroad. Sad I can try the pharmacy here, just want her to be okay through the night.

TheGirlWhoLived · 19/04/2022 21:15

I think ear infection too- particularly if you’ve been swimming in grimy water- please get her checked because it hurts and antibiotics kick in super fast! You can probably get out of hours emergency gp in unknown area (if in uk obvs)

Also I wouldn't give calpol and nurofen at the same time. Alternate them every 3 hours so she always has some pain relief on the go.

Something warm like a hot water bottle on the affected side can help but I'm guessing you won't have anything like that with you.

How old is she?

TheGirlWhoLived · 19/04/2022 21:16

If you know what to ask for you can probably buy them abroad at the pharmacy- you want a course of amoxicillin, assuming no penicillin allergy

packedlunches · 19/04/2022 21:16

What country are you in?

FrownedUpon · 19/04/2022 21:17

Sounds like an ear infection. I’d get it checked out ASAP as she may not be able to fly if it worsens.

TheGirlWhoLived · 19/04/2022 21:18

Through the night she’ll be ok- it’s fine that you’ve given both at the same time, make sure you give her calpol again in 4 hours and then ibuprofen in 6- this’ll keep her topped up.

Obviously if she starts getting floppy/grey/laboured breathing then you are going to need to find emergency care but I would presume the temperature will be brought down well with the analgesia

FusionChefGeoff · 19/04/2022 21:20

Are you in a hotel? Have a holiday rep you can contact in the morning to discuss a dr appt?

Winter2019 · 19/04/2022 21:20

You can't just buy antibiotics without prescription?! Abroad or not abroad

MrsDThaskala · 19/04/2022 21:22

She's sleeping now and not in huge pain. Not crying or upset, just the temperature and she calmly said her ear hurts. That's when I went to check.

I'll wait till the morning. I'm in Greece. Good tip about pacing the medicine out- just got shocked when I went to check her forehead and went into action mode.

MrsDThaskala · 19/04/2022 21:24

(Sorry- confused you all with the name change)

Thank you- feel a bit calmer now.

Newuser82 · 19/04/2022 21:24

I would try to get her seen at pharmacy or doctors if no better tomorrow. I flew with an ear infection once and burst my ear drum 😬.

TheFairyCaravan · 19/04/2022 21:25

I’d try to get her seen by the doctor in the morning.

I was poorly in Kos a couple of years ago. The hotel reception got the doctor to phone me because it was out of hours, and he sent a prescription through to the chemist, then I saw him on the Monday morning in the hotel. It was really easy, and only cost €50. He did say that prior to Covid I’d have been able to have bought antibiotics at the chemist, but they’d stopped that.

I hope she’s better soon.

TheGlitterati · 19/04/2022 21:28

My DC is the same. Saw GP who can’t find any sign of infection and said it’s viral, so it may not be an ear infection. Also recently had covid!

Try and space out the doses, she doesn’t need both at once and you shouldn’t give them like that. Minimum 2 hours between calpol and nurofen but ideally 3.

Hope she’s ok

I wouldn’t risk this 😳

Depending on where you are you can. I bought myself some amoxicillin in a department store a few years ago for a chest infection.
TheGirlWhoLived · 19/04/2022 21:36

Yeah the low dose multi ones you can definitely. @Winter2019 I’ve bought clarithromycin abroad

Peasandcabbage · 19/04/2022 21:49

Could also be tonsillitis. Sounds exactly like my daughter last month, also away, albeit UK. Sore throat, ears and burning hot to touch, no thermometer. White throat.

Newuser82 · 19/04/2022 22:14

@Kitkat151 no, I certainly wouldn't! 😬. Mine was just brewing the night before we went, by the time we got home it was super sore. Got of plane and went straight to doctors!
