Weaning- projectile vomit

I've just started weaning my baby who is just over four months old.

Our first attempt was a disaster - pureed pear which was projectile vomitted everywhere.

She has been ok with yoghurt and carrot but tonight it was projectile vomit again following mashed bananas?

Should I leave it a month? Why is fruit having this effect? I am new to this and have no idea what to think of it! This is my first child.

She is otherwise content but I'm scared of making her sick unintentionally

I'd forget it fir now snd leave it another month or longer. No rush. Your child will get all the nutrition they need from milk at present

Have you been advised to wean early by a GP? If not I would wait until 6 month mark - could be that the baby physically isn't ready for solids/purées.

Wait until closer to 6 months as advised and then try again

Is there a reason you're weaning her so early? I'd just leave it till nearer 6 months. Could be her stomach just isn't quite ready for it yet.

No reason really other than listening to older generations. I wasn't sure if it was worth the head start, also for some reason I'm really scared of weaning so wanted to nip it in the bud so I'd feel more confident about it which has backfired!!

Agreeing with above, unless you've been advised by a medical professional to wean so early, leave it until much closer to 6 months. She may not be ready and early weaning can cause health issues in the future

Have you had a look at this website? www.nhs.uk/start4life/weaning/ It's a great resource. I'm a FTM and found it really helpful. To be honest, I'd stop and wait until nearer 6 months. You'll get some different opinions on MN but i preferred to follow the NHS advice.

You might also find it easier to start with veggies rather than fruit. There is a book called "first tastes" i think? It's by Ella's Kitchen and is a big purple book. It has a two week weaning plan which starts at 6 months with bitter veggies and works up to sweeter veggies. The idea is that the baby doesn't get hooked on the sweet flavours first. There's also a great book called "how to wean your baby" by Charlotte Stirling-Reed which has a day by day plan as well. It helps make weaning much easier and takes some of the stress out!

Sorry cross post - I'd hold off then, as there's no medical reason to wean now. You'll hopefully find that at 6 months she is showing all signs of readiness and her gut will be matured enough to handle it then and hopefully be less stressful for you all! Smile

Hence why you're not supposed to start til 6 months

Garman · 19/04/2022 20:41

It's too early, she's showing you that so stop until she is ready.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 19/04/2022 20:45

I agree too early, as they are naturally ready for weaning their gag reflex starts waking, sounds like hers hasn't yet so it's a sign to stop for now.

My eldest is nearly 17 but didn't knows about readiness. He didn't sit unaided until 8 mints and I wish I'd waited. He used to projectile so much I learnt how to catch it back in the jar/bowl

As others have said it’s best to wait, if you’ll be doing it sooner dairy is a no go before 6 months.
