Not sure if things have changed since I had my DCs, but I was told they were only offered it if they had a close relative who either is native to or regularly travels to a country that’s high risk for TB?
My DCs all had it because my ex-Mil comes from Thailand and regularly travels between there and the U.K. and was also in regular close contact with the DCs.

Toponeniceone · 19/04/2022 18:37

Yes mine had it straight away. I did when I was born too.

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/04/2022 18:43

It’s only offered to some babies in my area. DD was 6 months and that was because of where I was born. Bit weird as I haven’t been there in decades and have had the BCG myself at birth and again at school. I’m pro vaccine, they’re offered if doctors think they’re needed so of course she had it. It was the easiest of all her vaccines, don’t think she cried at all and no after effects.

There is a massive shortage of the BCG vaccine at the moment so if you've been offered it you must be considered high risk

ThirdElephant · 19/04/2022 18:58

I'd give it to mine if it were offered. Sadly, it wasn't.

dementedpixie · 19/04/2022 19:02

I'm not in an area where its offered so neither of mine have had it

TotalRhubarb · 19/04/2022 19:08

DD had it at 8 months and developed shuddering episodes afterwards, requiring investigation for epilepsy by a paediatric neurologist. They eventually went of their own accord, but it was an incredibly scary time.

I regret giving it to her given the incredibly low likelihood of her getting TB.

This is the advise from the NHS website:
Who should have the BCG vaccine and when
The BCG vaccine (which stands for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine) is not given as part of the routine NHS vaccination schedule.
It's given on the NHS only when a child or adult is thought to have an increased risk of coming into contact with TB.
The BCG vaccine should only be given once in a lifetime.
BCG for babies
BCG vaccination is recommended for babies up to 1 year old who:

are born in areas of the UK where TB rates are high
have a parent or grandparent who was born in a country where there's a high rate of TB
live with, or are close contacts of, someone with infectious TB

If the BCG vaccine is recommended for your baby, it will usually be offered at about 28 days old.

DS had it at 2, was offered at birth due to Sri Lankan grandparent but I debated about it for a while. He was absolutely fine with it and I'm glad now that he had it. DD will be having it.

FolkSongSweet · 19/04/2022 19:19

The BCG boosts immunity generally (ie not just to TB). I’d definitely take it if offered.

ScrumptiousBears · 19/04/2022 19:26

Both mine had it. 8 & 6 yrs

Dumbledoressister · 19/04/2022 20:01

Mine had at 4 weeks and was absolutely fine. I wouldn't hesitate if it's offered - you don't want your baby getting TB!

Curlylocks1 · 19/04/2022 21:48

@TotalRhubarb omg sorry you had to go through that how scary! :(
My BD is Caribbean - I'm also half and half Indian and the hospital staff said they were offering it to me because i'm half IndianConfused
