When did your toddler drop their nap?

My son is going to bed later and later since the clocks went forward, I just thought it was that but now I'm wondering if it's because he doesn't need his nap anymore.

I have him in bed by 7/7:30pm but he doesn't fall asleep until about 8:15pm.

He takes a while to fall asleep for his nap but then sleeps for about 2 or even 2.5 hours. I normally put him down at 12 or 1pm. If he's not up by 3pm I wake him.

He's 20 months.

18 months, during the first lockdown, little bugger.

In toddler terms, 7:30 is a late start. I think whatever nap you do, 20:15 is a reasonable bedtime with that wake up and you are unlikely to get it much earlier than that. Average sleep range for this age is 11-13 hours total in 24h, so I think you might struggle with a 2h nap whenever you do it, to be honest.

26 months and will still have a nap at nursery for about 50 mins.
Will often go without a nap on the weekend but will be knackered by bedtime. If we’re not out they will have a nap at home for about an hour. More if they’re cosy in bed.

20 months feels a little young, bring the nap forward and limit it to 1.5 hours

DC1 was just shy of 3 when naps tapered off

DD1 started refusing her nap at 18mo, and by 20mo had dropped it completely and was much happier for it; she slept a full night overnight and woke up refreshed.

A friend’s son was taking a three hour afternoon nap and sleeping 11 hours overnight until the day he started reception.

Children don’t read the books, and to get an average age to drop a nap there will always be some who drop it earlier and some who drop it way later.

DD2 is 8mo and flat out refuses to sleep more than 2 x 30 minute naps a day. Clearly I’ve got another with low sleep needs 😒

@Timeturnerplease I feel your pain. My now teenager did 2x30 minutes at 6 months, you could set your watch on it abs dropped completely at 13 months

My son is also 20mo. We have just been away for a countryside holiday staying in the same place, same routine for 2 weeks and he slept amazingly!
We would have to wake him (unheard of!!) at 7am, nap at 12.30 - 2.15pm (woke him up). Then bed at 7.45pm.
It seems like his perfect amount of wake time is 5.5hrs with a 1.5-2hr nap.

Now we are back to reality and work/nursery next week where I think he can get a bit over tired and ends up waking a bit earlier in the morning.

My son needs to be worn out, plenty of time outside and cap the nap.
Xx

Shorten the nap so you wake by half 2 and see if that helps. Definitely agree that his wake window is too short before bed. Too young to drop it, DD had a phase around 22 months where we had to go for a little drive to encourage a nap but then started napping as normal again after a couple of weeks and still has an hour/ 90 minutes at almost 2 1/2yrs.

I wouldnt change the nap, just do bed time at 8:15 instead
