If your first baby had reflux…

If your first baby (like mine) had reflux/ colic/ wouldn’t sleep/ general nightmare first 6 months…. Was your second baby the same?

Trying to convince myself that I’ve coped with a very high maintenance baby and potential future baby will be much easier!

Mine two but the opposite way round, DS1 an absolute dream baby, DS2 reflux baby and months of hell. Yes I agree never two the same!

My second was a dream baby - she had the drowsy but awake setting! Shock We couldn't believe it. I think if I'd had them the other way round I wouldn't have known what hit me and would've really struggled.

Of course, now she's heading for 2 and I can't remember my last full night's sleep, but oh well.

First was one of those babies where passers by would say "our second was like that, if it had been our first we wouldn't have had a second".

DC1 had reflux, eventually successfully treated with gaviscon but not before he learned to be a howling nightmare. He was Hard Work for the first 4 years.

DC2 (big gap, took a long time to be ready 😂 ) had a dummy. I don't know if it was the dummy or luck of the draw. DC2 was super laid back and happy. The polar opposite.

DC1 mellowed our as he got older (mostly). DC2 took over the grumps instead.

We were lucky. I was braced for a second high needs kid.

If you go for a second you've got to expect the same (or, the horror, worse), but hope for a chilled one.

We started with principles with DC1. For DC2 we'd dropped all our standards and made everything as easy as possible!

Good luck OP!

Second was so much easier. No reflux, no colic, loved sleeping. The next one, however, was far worse than the first.

Duracellbunnywannabe · 12/04/2022 17:12

My second was worse but we managed to start working on her allergies earlier which made a huge difference.

Thank you! Not planning on TTC for a while yet, just idly pondering.

I think it is a better way round to have baby number 1 as high maintenance. It’s probably tempting fate to think that DC2 couldn’t possibly be worse though!

My second was a total breeze compared to the first reflux baby. I’m surprised I even had a second after the ordeal of the first and almost complete lack of sleep for a year

dicdicnurse · 12/04/2022 17:23

My second had none of the reflux issues my first had. She had a whole set of different problems but that's another thread!

MyGirlDaisy · 12/04/2022 19:35

My first had terrible reflux and it was awful, gaviscon, early weaning under medical supervision (was 24 years ago so everything was different then) was really hard plus I was unable to feed him myself (that’s a whole other story). Second baby two and a half years later was an absolute breeze! Fed, settled, slept, he did go through a 2 hourly feed phase but we got through it.
I would say though that in my experience difficult baby equalled easy teen, easy baby- well lets just say it was challenging! Both lovely young people now though. It’s hard with a reflux baby but sounds like you have done a great job.

AliceW89 · 12/04/2022 19:51

My DS was a refluxy, high needs, colicky, none sleeping, nightmare as a baby (incredibly easy going toddler now though!) I often wonder what a second would be like but I’m not sure I dare risk it! I’ve just spent the weekend with a 4 month old - I was gobsmacked when she just casually fell asleep in my arms and then her mum said ‘oh just pop her in the pushchair, she’ll be fine’ and low and behold proceeded to sleep for another hour. I can’t even begin to fathom what that is like Grin

I wish I could say no but my DC2 is 6 weeks old and I've just been to pick up a prescription for carobel. Only difference is it's silent reflux this time so there's not quite as much washing!

Daqqe · 12/04/2022 21:54

Both DDs had reflux. DD1, silent. DD2, vomiting & silent.

However, with DD2, I recognised all the signs & we were on omeprazole by 5 weeks. And this time, I was far calmer about the whole thing & did some research. We opted for Carobel over Gaviscon. Far less constipating & you can adjust the dose easily to suit your child’s reflux. As DD got bigger & more upright, we could reduce.

So DD2 was still far easier & once on omeprazole was a very content & happy baby. So different to big sis who was utterly miserable & who we battled the doctors about for 3/4 months until they gave us omeprazole!

Dd1 (now 10) was a high needs baby (cried a lot, hated being held by anyone but me, wanted to be held by me all the time, struggled with reflux). Dd2 (8 weeks) appears to be pretty similar (cries a lot, wants to be held most of the time by me or her dad, struggles with wind). I really thought I'd have an easier baby second time round 😆 fortunately dd1 has been pretty easy since she was about 18 months old so fingers crossed dd2 will at least follow suit then too!
