Hello,
My three month old baby has tested positive for covid today. I am really panicked and stressed. She was a little under the weather yesterday but today she has had a temperature, cough, blocked nose & very unsettled only napping for maybe 30 minutes, waking up crying etc. Please could someone help, I'm really worried

my baby is two and a half months, and we both tested positive. he's got a high fever too, helps to put a cold towel over his forehead, and giving him 36 degree baths and leaving him in just a short sleeve bodysuit to cool off from the bath. just give your little one lots of cuddles and if you're able to- entirely your decision, give some water, most likely your little one might feel dehydrated or overheated, so might help! but that's your call. just try keep your calm and remember that babies are stronger than we think, and you need to relax, if your stress, baby feels it. and if any moment you think baby is getting worst, you can always contact health services!! take care mumma x

Staying hydrated is most important. Try having her in bathroom with shower running to clear congestion and olbas oil on a cloth hung near the cot to help her get some sleep.

Our youngest had it at 4mth, had a cough, was congested and a bit off her milk. She coped pretty well with it and was fully recovered after 2 weeks.

Thank you so much for the responses. How much water would I give her? She is EBF if that makes a difference? Thank you so much for the advice I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. So sorry to hear your little one is also unwell! I hope you all recover very quickly! I will do as you have said now thank you again

I wouldn't advise giving water to a baby so young! Just keep breastfeeding on demand. And take advice from a medical professional. Call 111 if you're worried.

NotNowBoris · 09/04/2022 01:17

If she is EBF, don't give water. Let her nap on you and have full access to the breast. When they have a fever you have to look out for signs of dehydration, but your breast milk is 80%+ water so no need to give water on its own. Your milk will also contain antibodies to help her fight the virus, so it is much better to have this than water.

Calpol will help bring her temp down a degree. If it does not, you perhaps should seek medical help.

My baby was older than yours when he had it but he just wanted lots of BM, lots of naps and lots of comfort. I also alternated with Calpol and Nurofen, but they do say to seek medical advice before giving both together.

There is an NHS article here about high temperatures in children and babies. I found it very helpful.

Bluepolkadots42 · 09/04/2022 01:31

Hope your little one is feeling better soon. It is so horrible when they're poorly. Use calpol as per instructions on box if LO has fever- definitions of fever in young babies is on NHS website, i can't remember the figure off top of my head. Like PP said just breast feed on demand to ensure hydration although if LO is sleepy and droopy then you may need to wake to feed. Keep an eye on nappies being heavy and wet and enough per day to ensure LO is staying hydrated enough. And for anyone else reading this thread please don't ever give a young baby tap water- if you are going to give water it should be cooled, boiled water and you shouldn't give too much to avoid leaching of nutrients in the gut.

Hello
Thank you for the responses they are most helpful. She is EBF & aside from being a little fussy and unsettled she seems to still be feeding as she usually would. She has had two very loose nappies so will keep an eye on that as I don't want her to become dehydrated through this. Her wet nappy output remains good. Thank you for the advice, I have given her calpol this evening and it brought her temperature down she now seems more congested & fussy more than anything. Thank you very much for taking the time to reply the information is very helpful

Please dont give your baby a cool bath, then leave him with barely no clothes on afterwards , this will send his body into shock.
Also do not put a cold towel on him either

And you shouldnt give water to a 3 month old unless a dr says its ok.

Christ, i wish people would only give ‘advice’ if it was only correct!

SnowRoses · 09/04/2022 02:20

Also please dont give calpol and nurofen without a doctor saying this is ok

If you are worried then 111 or A&E

A&E will be more than happy to see such a young baby with covid

Just breast feed on demand when baby wants and keep a close eye on temperature and breathing , look out for ‘flaring’ nostrils, and any pulling in at the neck, stomach or chest. And if there is , ring 999 straight away

Yes, back at Christmas my then 4 month old had covid but he was absolutely fine. Had high temperature and really congested with a right barking cough. But within the week he recovered just fine. I wish I could say the same about my husband, he milked it for a couple of weeks! Try not to worry too much OP, babies are far more resilient than us!
MGee123 · 09/04/2022 06:25

Please don't give her water or a cool bath. Keep an eye on her nappies to make sure she is still weeing regularly, and keep an eye on her temperature. Give calpol if needed. She will likely be fine. If you are concerned call her GP. We all had it when our baby was 13 weeks. She had a temp for 24 hours then was a bit out of sorts for another couple of days but was generally fine other than not feeding quite as much as usual and being a bit more fussy.

MGee123 · 09/04/2022 06:27

I'm not sure why someone has said don't give calpol. You are fine to if they are over 8 weeks (and under 8 weeks if checked with doctor - it's just not licensed for under 8 weeks, but virtually nothing is). Just follow the instructions and dosage recommendations on the box.

ameliaand · 09/04/2022 07:24

Thank you for the responses.
We had a rough night, she cried for almost three hours and then was so tired she slept for four hours. Poor thing, heartbreaking. This morning she doesn't have a temperature & is drinking milk very well! Thank you all for taking the time to provide advice to me I really appreciate it & it calmed me right down! I will keep a close eye on nappy output & breathing & temperature. This morning she is congested & has a cough so I will monitor for any further developments. Thank you for the reassurance & sorry to hear so many little ones have been through the same. I hope you are all in good health now!
