Does this look about right portion wise for a toddler?

This is a typical lunch size for my 16 month old. It’s fish pie, with sweet potato mash. Does it look about right? Too much?

It looks about right to me, hard to tell, maybe could be a bigger than that even!

Justalittlebitfurther · 08/04/2022 14:12

Surely your child will tell you they need more or they won’t eat it all? Strangers on the internet can’t possibly know it depends on how active they are and how big etc

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/04/2022 14:15

They'll just eat what they want.

Every 16 month old is going to be different, if they eat it all they probably need more, if they leave some they've probably had enough. Also going slightly off topic here, doesnt fish pie already have mash with it? I'd do a couple of sticks of veg brocolli/carrot etc x

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 08/04/2022 14:18

If they’re feeding themselves I’d give more as lots ends up on the floor

FTEngineerM · 08/04/2022 14:19

Varies - lots of running around outside and a growth spurt and I literally can’t fill him up. On the other hand having a lazy day in the house and he barely eats, just picks.

Let them tell you.

You’re not wrong, but I was waiting for a nutritional critique to appear! Didn’t take long. Grin

Sorry I meant the topping for the fish base is sweet potato. She does have some sprigs of broccoli as well

Haha! Well we all had chippy for tea so no judging hereGrin @Notwithittoday honestly just go with her flow, good comment up above about if she is feeding herself then deffo do more as a lot will end up on the floor
Grumpyoctopus · 08/04/2022 14:34

Looks pretty much the same as what mine has. I think it's about right.

CottonSock · 08/04/2022 14:37

One of mine would have eaten less, the other double. It depends on appetite *and fussiness

Oneonetheracehorse · 08/04/2022 14:45

Cant quite tell how much it is and how deep the bowl is but it looks about the same as a portion for my 16 month old but some days he wants more, some less.
He would also have a yoghurt and then some fruit as well.
He's above 90th percentile for weight and height, very active but not quite walking independently yet if that helps (he crawls at speed!)

chisanunian · 08/04/2022 15:02

Looks about right to me. Some kids will happily continue to eat until they practically explode, so you don't want to start down that route!

Notwithittoday · 08/04/2022 15:04

I do a combination of spoon feeding and loaded spoons for her to self feed plus a few finger food veggies. Can’t really afford to have lots of food wasted on the floor. That’s why I was asking really as I know you can over feed with spoon feeding. She’s 98th for height and 90th for weight

Mine would probably have had more, but I’m sure if he was hungrier he’d let you know. Similarly if they were full I would find they would stop eating, as long as it’s ‘regular’ food. Probably wouldn’t work with cake or chocolate for obvious reasons, they’d just keep going then Grin

xXwhenwillitendXx · 08/04/2022 15:45

My 19 month old eats more then what I do. However unlike me, she will stop when she's full and not eat for the sake of it.

Somuchgoo · 08/04/2022 18:33

At 16m surely she'd be feeding herself normal family meals?

findingsomeone · 08/04/2022 18:41

Looks fine to me OP (I have a 20 month old)

Notwithittoday · 08/04/2022 18:46

That is a normal family meal. I was asking about the amount
