Cranial Osteopath recommendation

Hi,

Any recommendations for a good cranial osteopath in or around Maidenhead? I would like to get my daughter seen and hopefully they can help a bit with her favoring one side of her head.

To be clear, I am on the fence on whether cranial osteopathy is the real deal but since nobody in the NHS will help with this issue, I want to get her at least checked out.

What age is your daughter. I took my son to a cranial osteopath because my partner was willing to spend on it and I thought what the hell. I went in open minded. I think it's utter bunkum.

By favouring one side of her head do you mean she tends to turn her head that way to sleep and also to look at things? If so, my boy did that. He's 6 months now and absolutely fine and it has nothing to do with the CO. They develop fine in their own time.

The CO was a lovely chatty woman and I think most mothers who take their babies are just at the end of their tether with various newborn issues and get a boost talking to someone nice who listens to their worries and holds their baby gently for a while.

Save your money.

She is 10w. Yep, she mostly sleeps on on side and can visibly turn her head that side than the other. Her head is slightly flatter on the side she favours too. I think it all stems from a neck muscle issue (a mild torticulitus). Which seems to be getting better now but the side favouring remains.

I suspect you are right about the osteopathy being fluff but i would never forgive myself if i didn't try it at least once and later it would turn out it was needed...

Well I cannot judge you for trying because we tried too. I went to three sessions and realised that his reflux (the main reason I was recommended to go) simply got better with age. So in 3 sessions spread out over the course of many weeks, his body and stomach muscles simply developed until the reflux eased. He now very rarely brings up any milk. She also raised the fact that he favoured one side. He now looks every bloody place and cannot sit at peace for all the exciting things in the world to look at- especially when breastfeeding.

I do think that any genuine issues a baby may have will not be solved by the laying on of hands from a CO. I did not realise at the time just how little they actually do physically to the baby, perhaps you can find some videos on YouTube to give you an idea of what it is they do. I went to a mother and baby osteopath who did some laying on of hands to me too. Predictably it did sweet FA and my post pregnancy issues have simply got better with time.

I think if it's your first child in particular (as was the case for me) you simply cannot imagine and prepare for how quickly they change. Everything that seems to be an issue now feels so enduring. In reality it's gone in the blink of an eye and in a matter of weeks your baby is extremely robust and flinging themselves all over the place quite happily.

It's a load of waffle, save your money. If you're worried ask your health visitor to review. They can refer you to NHS physio services if needed (but it probably won't be - at his age most of these things resolve on their own).

I used a lovely cranial osteopath in Maidenhead. PM me and I'll send you her number. She definitely made a difference with my babes.

I went to see an osteopath when my DD was 8 weeks old and I was having terrible times breastfeeding. I didn’t know anything about it but someone from La Leche League recommended it to me ( or suggested it as an option anyway) but I remained open minded. I ended up at the Osteopathic Childrens Centre in Wandsworth who are a charity. They train osteopaths in the additional paediatric elements.( so further qualification ) My DD was found to have issues with her neck as a result of the birth and could only turn her head one way. This affected her suck mechanism which was causing me injury. They solved the problem in about 2 visits. I couldn’t really tell you what they did but it worked for us. My understanding is they are osteopaths and the cranial aspect is just one technique at their disposal.

PS. I had been everywhere for help with my breastfeeding. Breastfeeding consultants. Health visitors. Childrens centre drop in sessions for weeks and no one identified the fact my DD couldn’t open her mouth properly.
