My DD is 7 weeks old and I have just started using washable nappies. I still use disposables at night as I don't have enough washables to use them exclusively yet. DD has just started pooing down the side of her leg. I am going through loads of clothes. I think i am doing them up tight enough and i am putting 2 pads inside the nappy any other suggestions?

what sort of nappies are you using? could they be a bit big for DD yet? i found that our kooshies were better when DC were around 3-4mo, a bit hopeless for newborn

fiona76 · 08/01/2008 11:26

They are a bit big maybe I need to wait longer

there are lots of fab nappy-addicted ladies around here, who might have some good advice & suggestions!!
I just hope some of then turn up soon. I usually bump into them in the evening, how about we try to keep the thread going a while to hope they wander along?

Which nappies are they? If they are nippa fastening then you should be fine, but anythign relying on an attached fastener may be too big still

fiona76 · 08/01/2008 16:38

My sister gave them to me from NZ they are called honey child. I have 3 of them. I also have 3 called wonderoos they are definately too big really wide in the crutch. They both have poppers on the side to fastenen them. The honey child ones seem to clip up tight. At the moment I have been using them during the day and disposables at night.

There are loads of people on this site to give you advice, loads of different types of nappies, and loads of different nappy folds etc. It can be very confusing to begin with. At the end of the day it's what you're comfortable with using, suits the baby, and stops your leakage problem! Personally, I think traditional terry towelling is the best type of nappy system, with plastic pants put on over the top. The type of nappy fold depends on the size/age of the child, and it's output in terms of wee/poo! For me, the best all round nappy fold from birth to potty is the kite fold, which can easily be boosted for through the night, if necessary. As regards plastic pants there are many different makes and styles. I prefer the pull-on variety. You can get them from Boots and Mothercare, but, Disana are good quality, and fit over any type of pinned terry nappy. They have nice soft and stretchy leg and waist openings. The key to stopping leaks is to make sure all the nappy is contained inside the pants, and it's easy to check this by running your finger around the leg/wait openings. With the kite fold, I also turn up the edge of the nappy, which makes it thicker for even better containment. End of sermon. Good luck!

I've had a quick google, and honey child look very much like fuzzis, so yup, they could well be too big still - they need doing up tight (slightly snugger than you would think to do them normally iyswim) or they will leak.

Wonderoos - do you mean these ones or is there another nappy with the same name?

They should fit better, the width between the legs looks wide, but it doesn't tend to make a difference when they are wearing them. If you fold it down and overlap the tabs so they are on their smallest fitting then they should get a nice neat fit.

Yes that is the nappies I have got. I will try clipping them tighter I was scared to pinch her.

bump for more wonderful nappy-ladies!

Any type of nappy and plastic pants is going to look huge on a tiny or new born baby, and it's difficult to avoid leaks. The problem gets better as the baby grows and fills out the nappy. I'd use muslin nappies and tie-on plastic pants to begin with, because it's easier to get a neat and snug fit around the legs.

Thanks for the advice ladies. I'll keep trying with these nappies. They are so cute and I'm not going to carry on buying disposables for the next 2-3 years!!!

Fiona, if the pocket nappies are a bit too big, do you have any wraps that you could use over the pocket to make them more leak proof?

FlameNFurter · 09/01/2008 12:11

(Hijack - Curly, do you know there is another snugglebum doing nappies on here? Tis very confusing what with Disasterzone as well!)

curlywurlycremeegg · 09/01/2008 12:16

oh, where, point me in that direction pleas

Flibbertyjibbet · 09/01/2008 12:23

Curlywurly can you email me please - I often get too many of something very useful to other parents and give away. Running out of other mums to give to! I know you live near me from your Snugglebum-ing and didn't realise you were now curlywurly, been looking out for you as snugglebum for a while.
I don't want to put the freebie on here as there would be a stampede and the items are heavy so strictly collect or I drop off only.
Hopefully you are intrigued and will email.
