10 month old “stimming” a lot

My 10 month old baby has been stimming regularly since around 5-6 months old. He’ll wave and flap his hands a lot, and also does a little tensing and shuddering when he’s very excited or frustrated.

Is stimming at this age always a sign of autism? If your baby did this too, what are they like now and do they have SEN? My older child never did this at all and is NT.

I think you may be jumping the gun a bit here to call this stinking. Arm flapping is a normal method of communication in babies.

STIMMING Blush

Those things you have described sound perfectly normal. Waving hands and shuddering and tensing in excitement don't seem unusual to me.

Yabvu normal 10 mo!

DawsonsUglyCryingFace · 05/04/2022 13:35

Ok, thank you. I think because my eldest never did this, it’s concerned me a bit.

It wouldn’t bother me if he did have ASD, I’d rather just know and be prepared so that I can get the ball rolling for relevant support as I know the waiting lists can be ridiculous!

Yabvu for not accepting my yabvu ... you realise you can use that acronym anywhere right, there's no law? GrinWink

Hugasauras · 05/04/2022 13:40

DD always flapped her arms when excited at that age!

jupitermars1345 · 05/04/2022 13:44

My 10 month old waves and flaps and twiddles her arms when excited
Can't remember if my six year old did it she probably did but this is normal baby stuff for sure and at this age they wouldn't even start to investigate asd I don't think ?

ofwarren · 05/04/2022 13:51

Totally normal behaviour for a child that age.

bloodywhitecat · 05/04/2022 13:54

Some do and some don't but it is completely normal.

Hand flapping is common at that age. Do you notice anything else. I knew my son had autism from around 6 months but took me a long time to be taken seriously by professionals.

thecurtainsofdestiny · 05/04/2022 14:00

My eldest did this. Now an adult, NT and no SEN.

It’s mainly the frustrated tensing he does, he’ll clench his whole body and shudder silently when he’s frustrated or excited. He seems to being doing it more and more frequently.

What signs did you notice in your son, if you don’t mind me asking?

My son stimmed from about 10 months and is on the autism assessment pathway at the age of 27 months. Trust your instincts

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 05/04/2022 18:39

my little boy did this. He has non autistic stereotypies.

glittereyelash · 05/04/2022 19:25

@DawsonsUglyCryingFace I don't mind at all. Earliest signs were he was extremely fussy, disliked being held and wanted to be moving constantly. He hated people singing and didn't like if the TV was on in the evening time. He had a fascination with anything that spinned including the washing machine, wheels and windmills. He was very emotional and became upset and frustrated easily and was very difficult to console. He met all his milestones early with the exception of speech. He only had a few words then had a huge regression during the first lockdown. I'd told my doctor and public health nurse he had autism at his check ups but they said he was fine and it was only after the regression they put him on the waiting lists.

@DawsonsUglyCryingFace Hey. Could you update your little one?! My son does hand opening and closing twirling of wrists and also does the arms out tensing too. He seems to get angry really quick

just wanted to see if your baby outgrew any of them at all? xx

Donutsandtears · 22/06/2023 11:03

@DawsonsUglyCryingFace hi also wondering how things progressed for you and your baby?

@Danielle1989x my months old son constantly stims when not occupied- arms out and twirling and rotating kind of thing, twirling legs and I also notice other signs. I am so scared. How are you doing?

Ameliama · 19/09/2023 19:55

My 9 month old does everything you’ve mentioned. She tenses when excited or fustrated. Clenches and unclenches her hands, twirls her wrists and ankles and only seems to do it when she’s upset or excited. I’ve been worrying loads but everyone keeps telling me it’s normal. She’s done it from being around 5 month old, I think she may grow out of it when she starts crawling / walking? I’m not sure. I need some reassurance too x

99SR · 26/10/2024 12:22

@Ameliama how did things turn out if you don’t mind me asking? My daughter does the same.
