... animals, and my 6 year old has grasped the concept of seeds being moved about in different ways, and she's been wowed by the idea of a 21 month elephant pregnancy.

She asks me "So, how did the seeds get into your tummy, mummy? Did they have hooks on them, or did you eat them?"

er...

hehe
what did you say?

harpsichordcarrier · 07/01/2008 23:05

of course, you have the option of saying (as I do not)
"God put them there"

SueBaroo · 07/01/2008 23:10

no, I am indeed wonder-woman, because I managed to talk about sperms with wiggly tails with my head in a vomit bucket.

I think I might mention that God put them there when she's old enough to understand the concept of an orgasm

So, in the few days before she gets married, then.

well done you
and well done you for getting to six wihtout having this concversation
my dd1 is pretty, erm, curious and asked me when she was two and a half how the baby got in there
to my eternal shame I used the words "special cuddle"

SueBaroo · 07/01/2008 23:15

lol, oh no - we've had the special cuddle thing for a number of years already, because of her many younger siblings. We've just never discussed sperm before. #shudder#

Sue - we did the God puts babies in mummies' tummies line (I believe it)...DS had knkown about sperm and eggs for a fair while but not how they meet. He asked a few weeks ago, 'so Mum, why are you so sure God won't put anotgher baby in your tummy?'

I explained all about conception, and the fact that DH has had a vasectomy... not broached orgasms yet with my 8yo though!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 07/01/2008 23:17

Well done Sue, stirling work with bucket and all. Hope you feel better soon - you may need to discuss DNA.

My 6yo DD asked this a few months ago and I hesitated for a split-second before answering truthfully. Encouragingly, she replied 'urgh'.

I think she asked because I'm expecting baby. no 4. She wasn't even 3 when I had baby no. 3 (don't do the math) and that time she only asked how it got out. She got a straight answer to that too. Our friends were at the both of us!

TellusMater · 07/01/2008 23:17

Now I should have used the words 'cuddle' because after a few Q&A sessions with ds, it transpired that he thought sperm leapt from an adult penis unpredictably and that random passing women could possibly be impregnated.

And I am a Biology teacher [shame]

Beauregard · 07/01/2008 23:17

ah this is what i am dreading
I am a prude but don't want to be ,never imagined i would be but then my parents never spoke to me about it.

PandaG · 07/01/2008 23:18

no special cuddle here, said sex or making love, he had obviously heard these terms in the playground, I was surprised he had not asked the question about how the sperm and eggs meet before, as he has known about that bit for years, and is a right scientist

TellusMater · 07/01/2008 23:18

How interesting Sue. I leapt into the whole sperm and egg thing before addressing the 'special cuddle'.

SueBaroo · 07/01/2008 23:20

lol @ sperm randomly jumping from the penis.

The girls have a very popular game of 'midwife' where they each takes turns to 'push out' a baby doll, with much grunting and enthusiasm.

oh fun fun fun, I love parenting!

SueBaroo · 07/01/2008 23:22

ah, you see, her only context is Dh and I. No playground to worry about (for which I am eternally grateful)

No, the responsibility of not warping her fragile mind is all down to me

rofl @ tellusmater. crap teacher

PandaG · 07/01/2008 23:26

I can see why you are pleased re no playground gossip for this...I did stress to DS that we thought he wa old and mature enough to have this information, but other parents would think differently, so not to gossip about it in the playground...think he will keep quiet, but as I have told him the truth, if he does discuss it I hope he will dissemminate the truth rather than fiction.

I am rofl at the game of Midwife!

TellusMater · 07/01/2008 23:46

I knew I should have got out my reproduction scheme of work (with overheads and models) as soon as he started asking questions, but DH was against it. This is what happens if you don't teach a subject thoroughly...

MrsJohnCusack · 08/01/2008 07:28

lololololol at Harpsi uttering the words 'special cuddle'

Blandmum · 08/01/2008 07:35

I did the 'growing up talk' to dd's year in her school!

they asked me because I'm a biology teacher, not some pasing wierdo!

Poor old dd.....but that makes us even for all the 2 am wake ups over the yeas
