Opinions on heating formula in microwave

Hi, basically this question. I know all the advice about hot spots etc if heating formula in microwave, however at night time we make 2 bottles and put in the fridge so it's just a case of heating up when DS gets up for his feed during the night, we have the tommee tippee bottle warmer however takes 5 mins to just take the chill out, and DS won't take it cold. Had quite a few people tell me to put in the microwave for 25 seconds which they've done with their own children but I'm too scared incase there are hot spots that burn his little mouth. It would be easier for when DS is screaming for his bottle at 3am and we need to wait 5 minutes for it to heat up just a little in the bottle warmer or make fresh and have to run under cold water. Seen a few threads with people saying they do but they were years old ...
Thoughts please?

30 seconds, give it a good shake. Let it cool a bit as you swirl it.

Microwave is completely fine.
With DC1 I would have never used the microwave. With DC2 I was so sleep deprived I used to microwave and then give it a really good shake and it was absolutely fine. I used follow on milk and in the 2 and a half years of microwaving never once did DC burn her mouth. I also found she settled back to sleep a lot quicker as she didn't get so worked up waiting for the bottle.

I used to boil enough water in the the kettle that I needed and put the bottle in a bowl of boiled water whilst I changed their nappy rather than microwave it. Don’t know why I never used the microwave really, but guess I was too tired to figure out how long to nuke it for, and too paranoid I’d burn their mouths!

I used the microwave for my eldest (25 yrs ago). Check the wattage on your microwave, mine was a high wattage so only did 20 seconds from chilled. Give it a really good shake and do the wrist check before giving to baby every time.

I didn't. I tend to follow the NHS guidance for everything.

Buy a Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep. They are quite cheap on eBay. Absolute miracle machine - sterilises the powder then tops it up with cold filtered sterilized water, so you get a bottle in

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 05/04/2022 02:44

As long as its well mixed and maybe sat for a min while you sort yourself out it will be fine!

Cosywosy · 05/04/2022 02:51

If you have any baby markets nearby, check for a perfect prep. I got one for £10. Bought it purely for night feeds as had another downstairs.

Okki · 05/04/2022 03:19

I microwaved and shook well with both my DC's. My microwave was 10 secs per oz for the perfect temp.

Nat6999 · 05/04/2022 03:24

I used the microwave, zapped the bottle, a good shake & left it to stand while I changed the nappy then fed.

Mon2468 · 05/04/2022 03:36

Wow thank you all, I've been so paranoid. I tend to change nappy whilst waiting on the bottle heating in the bottle warmer so could do the same whilst waiting it cooling down from microwave.

We have the prefect prep machine and used it since we got home from hospital (DS is 4 weeks old) and we noticed he was a bit uneasy and mentioned it to midwife who said if we use prep machine try Normal kettle water for a few days and see if it helps him which it did so we haven't went back to the prep machine. FTM a so was doing as told, also told not to make bottles and put in fridge but weeks of waiting on kettle boiling during the night then waiting on it cooling down took its toll. Thanks all again I'm so glad I wrote this post 😀

I have 3 teenagers who survived bottle microwaving unscathed! I used to shake/tip/swirl the bottle afterwards in an "over the top" way to make sure there were no hotspots.

marriedthegambler · 05/04/2022 03:52

I had a bottle they I filled every night with boiling water, it cooled down before feed so I'd make the bottle like the prep machine would. Small amount of boiling water then top with cooled boiled water. Took less than 2 minutes to make and no waiting for it to cool.

BananaBender · 05/04/2022 04:31

What I used to do was microwave the water (previously boiled and cooled), add the powder and shake it thoroughly. That way nutrients in the formula weren’t being damaged by the microwaving.

Probably goes against recommendations but meh, it worked perfectly. Never had an upset tummy and she got her warm bottle quickly.

Gooseysgirl · 05/04/2022 04:46

Yes guidance is to make them up fresh, but I just did not have the time or patience. We used to make three in the morning and three at night. The key is to make them up in the correct way (water needs to be at least 70C to kill any bacteria that might be lurking in the powder), then cool quickly with ice packs in water in small sink or bowl. Then straight into fridge and use within 12hrs. We gradually got DC used to taking bottles at room temperature to avoid the faff of heating them up when out and about.

Gooseysgirl · 05/04/2022 04:50

I really don't see the issue with using MW, swirling the milk properly to avoid hot spots etc - it's just a case of being sensible about it IMHO!

BoJoSecretGF · 05/04/2022 07:43

The worst thing is actually cooked broccoli. I once put broccoli straight onto the plate from the saucepan and gave it to my 3 year old who immediately ate it and she put near boiling water in her mouth. The trees keep hold of water droplets. Poor little thing. I always give it a good shake and let it cool down now.

Mon2468 · 05/04/2022 09:26

Thanks all, I'll be trying it tonight. I have an 800w microwave and he is currently on 5oz will 30 seconds be ok?

Just try it with water till you work out the right length of time. I microwaved for all of mine and then shook them hard.

BertieBotts · 05/04/2022 09:40

You just have to shake it really, REALLY well. And beware that it doesn't shoot boiling liquid out and scald you (I have done this!) Test on your wrist after warming. If it feels warm it's too hot. It should feel wet but not hot or cold.

The advice is for the lowest common denominator. If you can apply a bit of common sense and thinking, and you understand why the advice is in place, then don't worry.

Chely · 05/04/2022 10:13

We've used microwave to heat with all 6 of ours and had no problems.

TobyMory · 05/04/2022 10:16

As above always microwaves everything and no harm done

Bruicer · 05/04/2022 10:23

Always test the temp on the inside of your wrist. I'd try it during the day, get the timing right then you don't need to worry in the middle of the night

Mon2468 · 05/04/2022 12:58

Thanks all 😀

I run the hot tap until its as hot as it goes then put the bottle underneath it for a min or so but shake it every now & then to make sure no hot bits. I think put the lid under for 20 secs to warm the teat up.

I check the temp on my hand after then warm a little more if needed.

Tried little one with cold milk but more went down his chin than in his mouth.
