CMPA?

Does this sound like CMPA? I have a 10 week old exclusively breastfed baby who has suffered from (mostly) silent reflux since birth, really. She:

  • Struggles to sleep on her back although is often okay on the playmat or changing table
  • Has terrible reflux that I can hear coming up and down her throat, which causes her to scream. This is not usually the case with morning feeds but is often really awful after the late afternoon or evening feed. Then she splutters and sometimes chokes and cries unless held completely upright (i.e. I need to stand up - holding her up in a sitting position doesn't cut it)
  • diarrhoea all the time - liquid tan coloured poos, often smelly, projectile explosive, and sometimes quite frequent (often four times a day or five, though sometimes only once or none)
  • dry, scaly red patches on her arm
  • eyelids often red and a little bit swollen looking (but the swelling is almost imperceptible)
  • projective, violent vomiting a few times a week
  • she once but only once had blood in her stools

My husband has asthma and allergies and I have eczema.

Could this be CMPA? I started to try to cut out cows milk and soya but I'm really struggling as I'm veggie.

Oh, and she coughs all the time and sounds congested. She also sneezes a lot. With the reflux, she quite often chokes on it and can't breathe for a bit, which scares her (and me) and makes her cry.

We tried Omeprazole but she had awful stomach cramps with it that caused colic-like screaming, so we stopped it.

Sounds like it could be.

Somethingsnappy · 04/04/2022 21:06

Yes, I think it is highly likely this could be the case. I think CMPA can be over-diagnosed, but the symptoms you describe are pretty classic actually, particularly with the congestion, eczema etc on top of the other symptoms.

Yes, sounds very similae to my dc.

Scottishnewmum · 04/04/2022 21:33

Oh man. How to cut out everything? I read that soya is similar, but most dairy substitutes include soya!

Coconut or oat based alternatives or nut milks. It's not easy.

Amicompletelyinsane · 04/04/2022 21:40

Cut out dairy and so yang avoid animal milks.there are so many alternatives that have come available in the last few years. Stick to it and you'll notice a change in baby fairly quickly. Within 2 weeks my baby was like a different child. Eczema went and diarrhoea stopped. My other child had the gastric issues and that resolved for him too

My DH is veggie, so we mostly eat veggie and DD2 was allergic to dairy, soya and coconut.

Where do you shop? Oat milk is nice, you need one fortified with calcium, vit D and iodine (Oatley, m and s own and asda own IF they still do it). Vitalite marg, stork block marg for baking. There is a really good CMPA breastfeeding Facebook group so ask on there. Lots of nuts and lentils. Bourbon biscuits are normally free. Bread tesco 50/50 and wholemeal, in Sainsbury Jackson bread.
