Can I use a normal nappy for swimming?

I can't find my LOs swim nappy and we go in the morning, I don't drive and I'm a single mum so it will be hard to get to a supermarket beforehand to buy proper swim nappies.
Is it rank to use a normal nappy?
Or just put a bloomer on her under her swimsuit?
She's 17 months and doesn't do anything in the water anyway, plus we will be about 50 mins max.
Any ideas?
I'm pulling my house apart to find this bloody nappy!!

Yes it will be rank normal nappies aren't designed to hold large amounts of water and will burst and spread into the pool which is massively unfair on staff to fish out and clean.

BluebellsGreenbells · 03/04/2022 17:26

The pools usually sell them. But yes that’s gross.

hilbil21 · 03/04/2022 17:26

It will blow up and disintegrate in the pool

No you can’t. They absorb water and have little crystal things in them - swimming nappies don’t have that and are just there to stop poo from circulating round the pool.

mynameiscalypso · 03/04/2022 17:27

Sorry, you can't. Less about wee/poo (frankly, I imagine a pool is full of the latter) but the nappy itself won't survive and then the whole pool will probably have to be shut while they clear it up.

greenmeansNogo · 03/04/2022 17:27

The normal nappy will puff up massive. The swim nappy is just to catch poos. They let out wee anyway, so if she's not going to poo the yeah risk it.

Marmite27 · 03/04/2022 17:28

You can’t! They swell up and burst. The pools round here usually sell a 2 pack for £1.50. Or did pre-Covid at least.

LemonDrizzles · 03/04/2022 17:28

Please Please please do not use a regular nappy for swim.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 03/04/2022 17:32

Don’t use a normal nappy, as others have crystals will absorb large amount if water and potentially burst which would need the pool to be closed.

Most pools sell swim nappies, but at 17 months you’ve probably got a pretty good idea when your dd opens her bowels and can spot the signs of when she’s going to do it, much better to go without anything than use a normal nappy.

SnowingInApril · 03/04/2022 17:40

I put my DC in the bath once in his normal nappy because he refused to take it off.

Oh my. It ballooned up. Huge. Weighed so much I could hardly drag it off him.

Whilst it was totally hilarious at home in the bath I wouldn’t recommend in a public pool Blush

Belkell · 03/04/2022 17:43

My dopey DH tried this (without my knowledge). It was bloody dangerous as the nappy absorbed loads of water — as it is designed to and weighed a ton. DD sank like a stone within seconds apparently.

Starlightstarbright1 · 03/04/2022 17:43

I put my ds in one a many many years ago.. overtied mum. Swapped him into a normal nappy instead of a swim nappy. It basically filled up instantantly. So had to go change him

PotteringAlong · 03/04/2022 17:45

Nooooo. No. It will drown her! It’s like strapping a concrete block to her bum! Honestly, try it in the bath and see.

Either buy it at the pool tomorrow or ring your mum and ask her to pick one up for you.

Hugasauras · 03/04/2022 17:47

Def not! DD went in the paddling pool with one on once and it went massive and bulging within minutes. No way it would have contained anything!

WelshyMaud · 03/04/2022 18:52

No no no no no!

I did it once at an outdoor public paddling pool. It was fine for ten minutes...until it wasn't.

It just broke apart...Big globs of the filling falling down his leg and him leaving a trail of it around the pool, then me crawling around trying to pick it up. In front of a load of gawping people. Omg it was awful, I'm cringing remembering it.

mamabr · 03/04/2022 19:02

Omg thanks everybody, I am definitely going to avoid using a normal nappy!!

No, you can't.

But just buy one at the pool. I don't think I've ever been to a pool that doesn't sell swim nappies.
