Dd 2.5 has had diarrhoea for 3 weeks now. Can’t get a GP appointment for love nor money. So we’ve been going out of hours, they are saying oh it’s a tummy bug, cut out irritants like tomato, spice and dairy for the time being. Fine have done but it’s not getting better.

We have another OOO appointment later but Is there anything I can do at home? It’s not fair on her and I’m not sure what to feed her?

What would you give a toddler with a dodgy tum?

@Bubblesandsqueak1

Put on very bland diet toast with dairy free marg carrot sticks, potato as plain meat ect sounds like she has a intolerance to something keep a food diary for to bland food for at least a week and see if it clears up first and as much dry food avid sugar too in fruit
I don’t think it’s an ongoing intolerance it might be post viral. She had it with aloe after a virus before, anytime she’d come into contact with aloe she’s come up in massive hives

@Bluffysummers bless her. Is it with every bowel movement? I’m sure you’re already doing this but just reassure her that any accidents aren’t her fault and that she needs to still eat while you figure out what’s wrong. If she’s well in herself that’s a great sign. It may just take a bit of time to settle. Bland diet as I and others have suggested before, maybe little bits staggered over time rather than full meals and keep trying the GP. I know you must be so frustrated but hopefully it will sort itself soon.

Before every bm she’ll clutch her tummy and say belly hurt, potty and then in a split second it comes. We’ve done lots of reassurance that it’s ok and everyone gets a sore tummy, mummy’s and daddy’s get them too sometimes and it’s not her fault.

Every BM is v loose and she’s getting afraid to eat just in case I think, seems like she’s associating meal times with tummy pain and diarrhoea, poor little girl. She was faltering growth before because she keeps getting these sort of illnesses, only just rebounded, hopefully she won’t get knocked back down again

My child had this. An initial bout of diarrhoea due to gastro and then secondary lactose intolerance caused by the gastro. We took all lactose out and it cleared up radically.

@LapinR0se hard cheese is quite low in lactose right?

What about butter? I know yoghurt, milk and soft cheese is out but I read a while back hard cheese is ok

I took everything containing lactose out (like reading biscuit packets before I’d give them etc) so a total elimination approach.
However my other daughter had a terrible bout of diarrhoea and the lab test confirmed rotavirus- I’m glad we did the lab test as at least we knew what was causing it.

Poor girl woke up in hysterics this morning as she soiled through her nappy, pjs, and blanket, she was covered and this has been going on for 3 weeks, she’s terrified to eat.

Anyone found weetabix to help? I’m desperate

Hi,

Have you considered coeliac disease? My daughter was only diagnosed after a trip to A&E. Diarrhoea was one of the main symptoms. Possibly worth ruling out.
You could reduce gluten or try gluten-free to see if that helps, but be mindful that this will affect diagnosis.

Hope she feels better soon.

Stop with the OOH doctors you won't get anywhere with them. Go back to your GP and insist on being seen or being referred. If you don't get anywhere them ask you speak to the practice manager.

It's not an emergency just unpleasant. Try Dioralyte if you haven't already.

Food advice at the bottom of this article: high fat, moderate not high fluids, no fruit juice/squash, low residue fibre

SecretDoor · 03/04/2022 10:56

Also make sure she is not having any sweeteners in anything as these cause diarrhoea

You must have missed the post where I’ve stated that’s where the GP sent us to ooo

She had the blood test for faltering growth a while ago that tested for coeliacs and it was negative

We've also had similar issues with toddler diarrheoa as others have said. Have you looked into that? For us cutting fibre has helped a lot. Mainly we've switched from bran flakes, weetabix or porridge for breakfast with cornflakes or rice crispies. So personally i'd avoid weetabix and try things like white bread toasted, dry rice, dry pasta, plain potatoes etc. I hope you find something that helps.

Could she be constipated and the loose bowel movements are overflow? Just a thought when you say she is holding her tummy.

I don’t think so as it’s been going on for 3 weeks now…

Her stool is now very very mucousy. Out of desperation I went to the pharmacist and he was astounded the GP won’t see her and have been sending us to OOO. I’ll email the paed she sees (normally takes 2 weeks to get a reply) and beg the dr the poor girl is too frightened to eat anything. She had a little bit of Easter egg today and bam 2 back to back. Breaking my heart I can’t help her. For her it’s more serious than for another child because she was faltering growth and has no borderline rebounded but she can’t really afford these continuous bouts of illness as she has so little reserves on her. It was these constant illnesses that caused the faltering growth in the first place

OP posts:
LapinR0se · 03/04/2022 18:12

Mucus means inflammation. I would be requesting urgent stool sample

Bluffysummers · 03/04/2022 18:37

She had one before and it was for blood and the gp ordered a calprotectin screen which was done and was elevated, sent a referral to a consultant which was rejected because calprotectin is clinically insignificant in the under 4s and didn’t put any info on the referral. Now the GP don’t have any stool sample containers
